I was brainstorming the other night about building a new tractor pulling tractor. One thing that I thought about doing for more power is a plane motor. I thought about a cylinder type motor. But, I have one problem, I can't find one. Does anybody know of one at a local airport that may need rebuilding? Another possible option is a turbine fan type motor. I realized that these are very expensive. But, these motors are very low maintence at stock conditions. Does anybody know of one of these or even a helicopter turbine motor around. Location isn't a problem, just in USA. If you have any suggestions or places to find one of these motors, PLEASE E-MAIL ME, Price should be somewhat reasonable and according to size. A larger engine is preferred, but small ones are OK Too. Like is said, PLEASE E-MAIL ME WITH ANY MOTORS FOR SALE!!!!! Thanks a bunch!!!!

JC - Bill Newland was one of those Allison powered Minny pullers wasn't He. I saw Bill pull ANY times, Him & His neighors Bill & Perry Noard. All from around Prophetstown, IL. Last time I saw Bill pull His Allsion powered G-1000 (which He bought at My neighbors farm sale) He was 78 yrs old if I remember right. The Noard Boys did O-K too..... pair of 427 BBC's in a Massy 55 chassis, and a pair of 409 Chevy's in a W-9 International.

They make have had an early Hemi in a Massey 44. I remember how well their twin Big Blocks ran very well. My Mom worked with one of their Wives, I think it was Bill.

Try Gardner Stone of Middlebury VT, he has a pulling tractor with three helicopter turbines.

Dave Snyder in Hudsonville, MI has most of Arfon's old stuff....Marv Kottman in West Point NE specilaizes in Military airplane and helicopter salvage and has a lot of experiance in turbine repowering. EJ Potter is somewhere in north Florida and used to have some surlpus airlane engines and turbines.

The first place I would look would be our federal government. Who else sells valuable equipment at dirt cheap prices? The attached link will take you to the outfit that currently brokers all government surplus. I don't see any complete engines today, but I'm sure they come up from time to time.

Note that not all turboshaft engines are equal. I would look for an engine of appropriate horsepower that has both civilian and military versions. You should be able to pick up a used military engine for a fraction of the price of the civilian version, because the military engines can't be used on certificated aircraft. For example, the Pratt & Whitney PT6A and T74 are almost identical, but the T74 is not certificated. Here's a link to a company that sells used T74s: http://www.dynamicaviation.com/pt6a_20.htm

I have seen a pulling tractor that used an Allison V12 aircraft engine. However, I think these engines are getting very scarce.

Go to the local airport and get a copy of Trade-a-plane. There are several used turbine engines in there but they are mighty expensive horsepower. It's a LOT cheaper to use pistons.

Several guys I've seen pull use them. Wayne Longnecker uses a Merlin V12 with a metric ton of cubic inches. There are a BUNCH of Allison V12's out there. Have seen a couple of people pull turbine engines out of helicopters. Trick is, it's not like you call up Dennys carb shop and get a stroker motor for the things. Mega bucks to build, mega bucks to run. Guy I talked to at the Iowa State Fair thought it'd take a grand or so to buy an Allison. No idea how much it takes to switch to alcohol and add 2 turbo's. If you want a 6 banger aircraft engine, I've got a Lycoming I'd sell cheap. Think it's stuck though.

Try a google search under "Used Gas Turbine Engines For Sale". I don't know how much experience you have with gas turbine engines but they're not for shade tree mechanics to work on and they usually require special tooling to disassemble/assemble and the parts are pretty expensive, especially the hot section parts.

Well I can not help you with your Quest but I will tell you that you are not the first to want to put an Aircraft Engine in a Farm Tractor to be used for "Pulling". Back in the 1960's a group of Farmers around Earlville/Mendota ILL. [I won't mention Names] were famous on the NTPA Circuit or whatever it was called back then for the Minneapolis Moline /Allison Aircraft Engined Pulling Tractors they created. The Allison Boys were the ones to beat at that time until Marshall Myre of Seneca ILL. and his Fire exahusting International Harvester Tractors came on the Scene. and How about Buzz Timmons and his V/8 Detroit powered John Deere 4010.Art Arfons of Ohio toured with his JT Jet powered Tractors and Drag Cars in that Era also. Of course they can't compare with what is on the pulling circuits now, but in their day they drove the Fans wild with the show they put on.

Try your local airport,we have a company rebuilding MIG jets and there has to be more out there. Heck just call the airport Manager at a small strip and he will know of somebody.
