You all have helped me alot with my tractor...now I have a question about my 98 Tahoe brakes. It has ABS, which I would rather not have. When I slow to come to a stop, the left front sounds like the ABS has kicked in and I feel it in the pedal. If I stop hard, no problem. I have changed the brake pads, put on new rotors, checked wheel bearings the best I could, checked wires to the ABS, used high-temp synthetic grease on the bolts so the caliper can slide....still does it. It has never failed to stop me, it's just driving me nuts! I usually do all my maintenance on my stuff...but I may have to take this somewhere as I, like everyone else, have to know that I have good brakes. It is a 98 Tahoe, 4WD, automatic, with 70,000 miles. Just a thought, what if I unplugged the ABS from the caliper.....what kind of trouble would I get into? Any and all help would be appreciated. Mike

There's an easy fix to your common problem(and it's not disabling ABS).You have a small amount of corrosion at one or both front wheel speed sensors. This corrosion pushes sensor away from the tone-wheel.You need to remove allen bolt at front wheel bearing/hub assy, remove sensor from hub,and clean area around sensor mating surface.A screwdriver or file can be used to make sure the metal surface is flat.Clean any scale from sensor & dab a little synthetic grease on sensor & problem solved.Fixed many this way in my shop.~brad

Good advice here. Also it is covered by a recall for 99 and newer. I have '98.

How old are the rotors? Did you put on 90 day rotors or 2yr warranty rotors?

very true lumpy. i have had customers bring cheap rotors and have found them to be untrue echange them again untrue i personally took them back to napa, he said the cheap ones are sometimes made from the same material et as the "premium ones" the only difference is the cheap ones they might only tets and check 1 out of every 1000 rotors they make and then if there is a problem reset the machine but still sell the 999 defective ones. the higher end ones they check ever say 100 rotors and dont sell the bad ones. ive had to take new rotors the cheap ones and couldnt get them to work without a pulse in the pedal and true them up on my brake lathe before which practically when all was said and done would ahve been the same as the premium rotors.

The reason I questioned the rotors was it happened to me.... '98 1/2 ton 4x4. And the strange thing, same side- left. After the 3rd set of cheap 90 day rotors I got pissed and bought the 2 year rotors and life time ceramic pads. That was almost 30,000 miles ago, haven't had a problem since. The down time of R&R x3 would have more than paid for the good stuff the first time around. The comment someone made about the sensor is something I would check while I was that far into it.

Thanks to all...I was pretty sure someone would have an answer. Traveling tomorrow, but first chance, I'll try your suggestions and then let you know. Mike
