I can repair just any problem on my tractors, but when it comes to these computors It is a challenge for me. My problem is my clock looses time when the computor is shut down, and the year also goes back to 2001. Any help is appreciated. Stan

Is this battery in the monitor, or in the floor unit? Does this clock reset itself? Thanks

Hi Delbert,

The little waffer battery and it's holder are mounted on the motherboard in the main box and powers it's "Keep Alive" circuity when the computer is shut off.

No, the clock does not reset by itself.

Stan,

You need a new battery.

Also,

Should have said that if you have any speciality settings in your bios, be sure to change the battery with the machine running, or you'll loose your settings.

I can't believe you advised him to change the battery "with the machine running"

What were you thinking?

I consider any advice telling someone to change a motherboard battery without powering down "foolhardy"

Well, that's fine.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, that's for sure and you’re probably right, I should have told him to call the power company and close the grid on his entire sub-division.

However, and contrary to what you may think, hot swappin’ a battery in a PC has about the same difficulty/danger level as pullin' your socks on in the morning.

‘Course, whadda I know? I’ve only been building the silly things since 1988.

Allan,

What a juvenile response, "call the power company and close the grid on his entire sub-division"

I offered my opinion based on my own personal experience. I presently teach Computer Repair and have been in the electronics/computer business for 40+ years. I would not replace a battery on a powered motherboard myself, much less recommend that to a novice. If you do, then good for you. I still consider it "foolhardy"

They are just a little waffer battery that you can buy in any Wal-Mart, but you'll have to find the number off the old one as they are specific.

They are in kind of a little spring loaded affair. You just "push" 'em over to one side and lift.

I use one of those tiny little pocket screwdrivers to lift 'em out of there.

Be sure you ground yourself to the case before you touch the inards so as to not zap anything with static electricity.

This is the sole purpose of that battery's role. To maintain your settings while the machine is turned off.
