Just a few questions on a 4840 MF. Does it have a Cat V-8 for a motor, or is it a Cummins. I dont know to much about MF, also are they a reliable or troublesome tractor. Been looking for an older 4 wheel drive. Would like to have a Versatile 500 series, or a panther or tiger. Course anything 25 years old has been worked hard.

They have the 903 from all the one's I have saw but as long as you don't lug the crap out of them they run good 350 hp and up depending where the screw is set , but they are fuel hogs 10-15 gal per hour if working hard .

Would a older model 7520 JD have a better motor and cheaper than the MF 4840? Thank you all for guiding me on the MF.

There's no comparison in HP of the 4840 MF, vs. the little Deere 531 in the 7520.

The 7520 is a fair tractor for it's age, but can be costly to repair because massive diassembly is required for many repairs, even a clutch replacement. I have an 8630, which I kept when I quit farming. It served me well for many years, thank goodness, as they are costly to repair, too.

Any older Versatiles or Steigers with in-line 6's for sale in your area?

I think they are the cheapest to keep running of the older 4-wheelers.

Price OH parts and re-con heads for that $$$$ Cummins V-8 vs. a Cummins in-line 6, before you consider buying it. The $$$$$$$$$$ for parts for the 903 will make your head spin!

Probably not the worst engine in the world, but a in-line 6 is WAY better, and you'll never get the hours out of it between major repairs as an in-line will give.

All i can tell ya is that it has the 90 nothing (903) cummings V8 in it and from what i have been around them no two run the same as we found out in the Big trucks back when they came out one would run like a scauled dog and the next did not matter what ya did to it it was a dog.

We have a 4840... we done a good bit of checking on it before we got it.

its a 903 cummins v-8 and these were DOGs in trucks; however from the local cummins licenced repair center they made good tractor engines...

the 4840 was a 260hp (engine) tractor and the rears ends are pretty good. from what we were able to find they are really good machines.

our 4840 has 5600 hrs nothing done to the engine at all! 2 bearings replaced in drive line and 1 small seal leak on an imput shaft..

however.. THE 3pt hitch controls do tend to stop working.
