Maybe she just wants some hatching eggs. Incubate them with a heat lamp. Wouldn't cost so much to send a few heritage breed eggs, if she's starting a hobby. A grab-bag of day-old chicks costs about $40 for 25. Bantams are a bit higher. If the flu hits, we might lose a lot of breeding stock for the nearly extinct breeds. Maybe those of us who can, should keep a small "Noah's Ark"

Free? No such thing. in reply to CG, 12-12-2005 08:46:24
If you can't afford to buy them or ship them, how are you gonna afford to feed them? Free things tend to cost more than boughten things.

My F-I-L In Southwest Wisconsin has to get rid of 2500 brown hens this month. He'll SELL 'em to ya for 2 bucks a pop. Any that don't sell for laying go to the Hmongs for butcher. They're one year old and certified organic laying hens.

Organic is quite a racket, can't let the hens go through a molt 'cause the quality of egg goes down in the second year. I think it's a backhand way to sell him more danged birds every year.

If you REALLY need some hens(not just scamming), and have a coop, water, run/pen and feed available, check local feed store, FFA, 4H club for leftover projects. Some students going to college might give you their half pets if you can provide a good home for them. Some Hatcheries will occasianally have a few odd leftovers to donate also. Humane society sometimes gets over sized easter chicks to adopt out. Florida has some free range birds you can pickup.

I have about 15 hens,no roosters they are about 10 years old, they shoul be good for about 15 more years. I live in calif so if they are shipped they will be real hungry when you get them. As a added bonus I will throw in two Emu's. They also lay eggs. You will have more eggs than you can eat, so you can sell the extra eggs, and make some money. You can't loose. Stan

CG, Doggone, (snapping fingers), I just got rid of the last of the "Free, good laying chickens" about a month or so ago. They were "good laying hens" that is until the feller who bought them decided to expand his operation, and raise more himself. The trouble is, according to him, is that he either planted them too deep or too close together, and they all died. I"m just wondering, since you want the chickens free, do you want the feed and the brooding equipment free also? Let us know in a few weeks how this charity deal is working out for you.

You'll need to get in touch with the appropriate government agency in order to get free chickens, as that is the only source I know of for free stuff on a consistent basis. You will need to establish that you have special needs, which can probably be done by showing them your post. The beauty of this is, after farming your free chickens for a couple of years, you can apply to the government to be paid to quit raising chickens. Of course, you will have to get rid of the chickens you have in order to get into the business of not raising chickens- but that is not difficult, just eat them (after applying for cost sharing for the processing expense). I don't know why people work so hard- they need to learn to just harvest the never-ending largesse of our Uncle Sam. Glad you posted- I think you are on the right track.

Found someone else to pick on, eh? What a relief.
You know, it's not my fault I'm plow phobic. You get chased down a steep hill by an out of control 3-14 JD trailer plow and we'll see how eager you are to haul a 4-16. Why, with the weight from that extra bottom it might just get up enuff speed to catch me this time. I gets a cold sweat just thinkin on it. I'll just wait until you decide to deliver.

As for this fellar here, someone ought to tell him that nobody gonna give him any good layers for free! Maybe he'd like a couple head of prime beef cattle too? All kiddin aside, how about the feed store, in the spring, baby chicks.....ya know?
