3 men rent motel rooms for $10.00 each ($30.00)
Clerk decides he over charged, gives dishonest bellhop $5.00 to refund to 3 men. He keeps $2.00 and gives each man back $1.00 which leaves them having paid $9.00 each. $9.00 times 3 men = $27.00 + $2.00 that bellhop kept = $29.00!! What happened to that other $1.00????? ???

Start with $30

Clerk has $25

Bellhop has $2

Man 1 has $1

Man 2 has $1

Man 3 has $1

25+3+1+1+1=30

Clear as mud!

What dont you guys understand about Hendricks answer? They paid $27. period. The clerk ended up with $25 and the dishonest bellhop $2. That equals $27.Its a brain teaser, thats the intent, but dont make it harder than it is.

I've had lots of fun with this one, as well as I remember it was in a high school math book (it's been a while since I was in HS.) Hope you all enjoyed it!

Hi Jubal,

That was a good one!

The new TOTAL is $29, NOT $30, that the 3 men paid.

9+9+9=27
+2= $29 the new TOTAL amount

The total amount was adjusted upon the $3 refund to each man or $9eh x 3 = $27

Then add the $2 that the bellhop kept, for the new TOTAL amount of $29.

(30-3)+2=29

The original $30 total now means nothing once the refund was given!

The bellhops $2 means nothing (except that he ripped the men off for $2 of their refund). The total is still $30, but all that matters is it cost the men $27, and they got $3 back. 27+3=30

There is no such thing as 'a left over dollar'.
The bookkeeping is:
The three men paid a net total of 27
The clerk has received a net sum of 25
The bellhop has 2 in his pocket
It sure is a twister tho!
Keep them coming.
Cheers, Hendrik

They each THINK they paid $9 each, which is $27. The manager charged total of $25, and the bellhop kept the extra $2. 27+3=30

Better do your calculations again Stan. If they each paid $10 to start with and each received $1 back and bellhop kept $2... does not come out to $30 mathamatically

3X $9= $27 + $2 Bellhop kept equals $29.00

this is a classical example used in higher math, that shows figures are not always what they seem to be Shoots down "liers can figure but figures don't lie.":-) :-)

Maybe I wasn"t clear... Each man paid $9, BECAUSE each man got $1 back. The original $30 is the $9 each man paid, PLUS the $1 each got back. 27+3 still equals 30! The $2 the bellhop kept came from a $5 discount, in which case each man would have paid $8.33 (actually 8 dollars and 33 1/3 cents). Then it would be 25+5=30. It"s quite simple, and there is nothing wrong with my math, well, at least not this time :)

Stan, they did not get $1.33 back and I don't see where you came up with $3.00. since ea. paid $10 and got $1 back, therefore they only paid $9ea. And 9X3=27 + 2 the bellhop kept come to $29...:-). Don't care how you switch it around still comes out $1 short mathematically. logically it should come out to total of $30.00 but mathematically it does not...

Keith

No reason why numbers should add to 30.
