I"m off tomorrow to shop for a used grinder/mixer. I plan to use it to grind up shelled corn and mix in some sweet feed. Anything I should look for on the used machine and are there any features that I should definately get? At this time all I know about them is that I need one, the shelled whole corn I am feeding is passing straight through my cows. Thanks for any help!

Ok:

First if you can a mixer that has all hydraulic motors on the augers, that would be great. they are less maintenance and run smoother. When you look at the mixer first look at the augers. Look for sharp thin flighting, if so it has been used a lot. Next look at the hammers. One side of the hammermill will open up. Open it up and loom at the hammers. There are 4 wear surfaces on them. They can be flipped end for end and side to side. If they are all 4 rounded badly, you need new hammers. Cost?? Also, remeber all you have to do is crack the kernel, any crack will let they cattle digest the corn. Mix the rest of your ration and go from there. Also if you can get your hands on some ear corn, they gain well on it, but it does grind harder.

grinder will not help! in reply to KYfarm, 12-08-2005 16:25:35
Go to www.agriculture.com and click on cattle talk discussion site. That topic was just discussed. Cattle will only digest so much of the corn and the rest flows out the back whether the corn is ground or whole. Your grinding the corn will only cause you to not see it. If you do not believe me, gather a sample and wash the sample and you will still find pieces of corn, just smaller pieces.
