While you most likely do not need to stop because it is a household move; stopping so you can avoid the harassment is OK.

Most trucks do not like to stop at the scales because of the DOT.
Since you have no log book; are not responsible for any infractions for faulty equipment; you will only be worried about weight. This is why you should not let the scales scare you. Any DOT violations are the truck owners problem not yours.

Once you have your truck loaded and ready to leave stop at the local truck stop and weigh the truck. Will cost you about $8. You will be allowed 12,000lbs on the steer axle and 20,000lbs on the drive axle in all states. (some allow more)
Once you know the weight is correct you are ready to go. As you approach the scale notice any signs that may tell you to bypass. Some states weigh with a motion scale in the road and then flash a sign telling you to bypass if OK.
When you pull onto the scale ramp you will line up with other trucks.
Some states weigh each axle one at a time and some states have 3 scales in a row that weigh the whole truck at one time. Notice what one they have.
There will be a sign next to the scale. It will have words..... .....
STOP
NEXT AXLE or PULL UP
BACKUP
GO AHEAD
REPORT INSIDE

Just follow the signs.
Once the truck in front of you has cleared the scale you will pull forward onto the scale. Stop with your front axle on the 1st or only scale depending if it is a single or whole truck scale.
Once you are weighed you will get a Go ahead or Report inside sign. If it says report inside pull to the side and walk inside.

I would not even bother with them since it's only a rental ,most scales signs say commerical trucks must stop ,and I used to shuttle U-Hauls and we never stopped for any scales if stopped play stupid and tell them this is the first truck you have ever drove and they always shake there head and leave you alone

Have called DOT for each state and have been told they want to see my smiling face. However they say they may "wave" me through. Have never fooled with the scales before so am just wandering about the hassle. Montana warned that a $94 fine was in order for not stopping. Noone seens to have thte same story????? ??

Jerry,

We left Yellowstone and headed up to Bozeman and then headed east a ways to get back into Wyoming (I think)--no stops no troubles. I wonder if the homeland security stuff might be driving the more stringent requirements (or desires) that the DOT folks want you to stop. Maybe they want to check you against their profiles??

Jerry,

We ran from the Pocatello area of Idaho to Florida, (via South Dakota and through Missouri) with our 36' gooseneck and three tractors onboard and never stopped at any scales. Have made many trips across I-70 & I-80 to PA and haven't stopped at any of those either. We're not commercial though. As the other fellas said--be real careful on the ice--that stuff I respect alot!!

typically rental trucks have apportioned plates on them, there by elimating the need to stop. But its always good to check, or play dumb!

You may want to check with each states Gov. web site to see what there laws are. I moved from LA to TN in 01 with a 25' Penske truck and did not have to scale. This truck had a gas engine and only got 5-7 mpg. The Detroit should be a couple miles better, I would think. Be careful in the ice...

I have driven a commercial truck for almost 20 yrs. Usually rental trucks arn't considered commercial vehicles and they normaly don't go through the scales. I'm sure someone will differ, I would probably go on by and if I got stopped would play dumb, which I seem to have a knack for anyway. Especially if you don't have a CDL. You could convince them you don't know any better.

They shouldn't really bother you unless you have Arizona or New Mexicao plates and a Si accent and are speeding in the left hand lane. Otherwise, they got bigger fish to fry. Harley. By the way, it's supposed to be up to 51 here in Springfield Monday. Have a good trip.

I have driven commercial trucks for 20+ years. I very seldom saw You Haul type truck pull in to the scales, if they did they were waved thru. Last year I drove 2 rental trucks from CA to GA. I never pulled on to scales on either trip. I had a brand new IH truck and got about 8 MPG.( diesel) Truck was loaded full with a trailer on behind. Have Fun Boyd
