Anybody have a trick to get a drain hole opened up without pulling the well. My well freezes up because it is not draining down. I can thaw it out but frezzes again when done pumping.

Freebird, If you are talking about a freeze free hydrant you might try slowly closing it and listening to see if you can hear the back flow of air as it drains down. The one next to my well got out of adjustment and would not drain down if the handle was all the way down. I had to stop the closing motion with the handle about 1/4 open position for it to drain down. I am just leaving it that way till spring. I dont want to mess with it at 12 below zero. ;-)

You must be speaking of a frostproof hydrant? If my F.P. Hydrant drain hole ever plugged, I would try hooking up some compressed air (not more than 50 or 60 PSI) and blow back thru the hose fitting with the valve closed. Don't know if this would work, but the air just might find its way thru. Of course if the whole thing is frozen, you would have to figure a way of thawing it out first. Heat tape, torch, electric welder?

No Hydrant ,it's a well with casing and main line inside of that .And its plastic so no backhoe , no welder , no drill. Wells pump with windmill , pumpjack or submersible pump and the water drains out of a weep hole in the mainline into the casing 6 or 8 feet below the ground when not pumping to keep from freezing. I might try the compressed air though.

Ah. One of those deals. Was wondering what you had. Not much help, here in Minnesota we need a better system then that. Suppose you will need to dig it out, or pull the pipe up depending on how this is designed. Good luck with it. Too many frost/thaw cycles, you will get an oversized pipe, split pipe, ect. - none of that is good.

not unless tapping with a hammer would loosen up rust and unplug the weep hole?

To open the plugged drain hole requires the use of a number two backhoe (shovel) and digging down below the frost line. Then use your cordless drill to remove the rust from the drain hole. The first part is hard work and the rest is easy.

Thaw it out and install heat tape. If it is frozen you might need to repair a cracked pipe.
