Being primarily a GM man, I'm a bit at a loss.
I have an 89' F-150 ext cab pickup with the 5.0 FI engine, 5 speed stick and it's 4 wheel drive.
In the past few weeks it has developed a a miss or "stumble" at about 50 mph. It's lacking for the power it previously had and fuel mileage is gradually going south. It was tuned up this past summer with ALL new ignition and the distributor bushings were not worn, also it's been completely serviced including a new air filter. This just started happening in the past few weeks and has had 3 tanks of gas thru it since this has been going on. Any peculiarities to this engine that happen that might cause this? On a GM I could probably track the problem down in short order. I'm just not familiar enough with Fords. I must say, I've had this truck for 2 1/2 years and it has changed a lot of the paradigms I had about Ford trucks.

I agree to check the fuel filter. If I remember right these had two fuel pumps, one in the tank and one on the frame. If the lift pump is getting weak (tank pump) it can cause some problems. If you have access to a scan tool I do believe that you have data display on this year and you can watch the oxygen sensor or just put a fuel gauge on it.

all have posted good ideas to check. But I didn't see any comments about a fuel filter, lose of power and bad mileage could because of a clogged fuel filter...

good luck

Most likely, and SIMPLEST problems...

A bad spark plug wire, or spark plug.

Even if the wires have been replaced, you could have a bad one. We had had bad ones right out of the box, even.

Check each wire individually, from end to end, with an Ohmmeter. The shortest wires should read something like 5000 to 7500 Ohms, the longest ones, maybe as high as 10,000 or 12,000 Ohms.

Look at the plugs, to see if one looks different from miss-fire. Look for cracked insulators or other damage.

If the plugs and wires are OK, I would do a compression test, and then there are all the possibilites of injector problems, or manifold air leaks.

I agree with you Bob. I had a Taurus that had similar symptoms. I pulled and cleaned all the plugs, no improvement. Replaced all the wires, still had the problem. A mechanic friend of mine told me it's probably a plug. I started pulling one wire at a time with the engine running and sure enuf, one cylinder was not gettin' fire. Replaced the plug on that cyl and "voila", no more problem. I could not find a thing wrong with that plug, but she just wouldn't fire.
