I have a 4mth old puppy, hinez57, maybe some chow, some Lab and???, about 20lbs, that quit eating and drinking Thrusday morn'n, and slept most of the day.

Eyes looked dialated so we thought maybe he ate a sand toad. They make a dog very "high" for about 12hrs then they recover.

Friday his eyes were back to normal and would drink water, about a qt day total, but not eat. Vomit was white and frothy and very little of it, and only one time. Slept most of all day.

Saturday he drank more water but no food, eyes normal. We forced 9cc of 1/2 n' 1/2 down him. 6hrs latter we forced in 3cc of olive oil. Hour latter he did vomit oil and water, all clear vomit. Latter took more water, about a qt day total, on his own.

He's up and walking on his own, just not very far or fast. He's loosing weight and urine output is good. No other abnormal signs.

When he took the oil it was very clear he has a stomach problem as you could see and hear air traveling up from lower part of the stomach so he must have eaten something he shouldn't have and hasn't passed it yet.

Questions?

I have oxytetracycline, tetracycline capsules, pennicillian g, cephalexin capsules, available and wondered about giving him some antibiotics, either IM or oral but while he's this weak?

Any other home remedy cures you want to suggest?

Hi All,

Were making headway now. Late Saturday night he passed something, we couldn't tell what but gees did it smell bad.

Sunday he still didn't look good tho and quit drinking water and had me even more worried so late last night I couldn't stand not trying something more.

I mixed about 75mg of a cephalexin 500mg capsule, in 12cc of water and forced fed that into his stomach.

I then mixed up some tuna oil, small amount of tuna, ceral dog food and water in a blender. Force fed 12cc this morning then repeated in about 2hrs.

He's now eating and drinking on his own this afternoon. He actually played a bit with the other pup but quickly wore himself out. Were going to keep force feeding him our mix for a couple days along with the antibiotic.

The vet recomended tetracycline 500mg capsules, given at about 100mg doses but we've had a great response with cephalexin on our other dogs. Just don't use too much at one time as they react very quickly to this antibiotic.

We got to thinking late last night that our Lab had bitten the pup on the nose, drew blood, a couple weeks back as the puppy was harrasing the "bigdog". We now think that this was nothing more than an infection from that bite.

While we"re on the subject of labs...late last winter I had a 10/11 year old black lab that got an erection and couldn"t put it back in his pants and a week later he died. Never heard of such a thing before, anyone got any comments on this. Please keep "em clean. Fred OH

In humans thats called a priopism (sp?). It"s normally due to a back/spinal cord injury. Like T-bone said, maybe it was a clot or tumor pressing on his spinal cord. Sorry about your companion.

Hi Fred,

Had anyone else asked this I wouldn't even responded but since we've known one another for many years, I'll tell you what I think.

I would bet he had a blood clot and why he died a week latter as he probably had several clots. Just like a stroke in a human.

Hard to loose a good friend.

Well, thanks guys for the response because I surely was stumped on this one...I had never heard of such a thing....and of course Jessie was the best dog I ever had....or did he have me? It was kind of a hard question to ask and I thought about just forgetting it but curious minds want to know, I guess. He had had a back injury previous to this...so it kinda goes along with that. Thanks again for a delicate question answered. Fred OH

We had a 6 month old cocker that had the same problem. After the local vet did his which dance for 7 days to no help we took him to Cornell University vet college. They promptly x-rayed him and found he had one of those gumball machine super balls lodged in his intestine. They held little hope for him and when they tryed to put him under to surgically remove the ball he cashed out.
Dad mailed a copy of the report to the local vet with the suggestion that he find another line of work.

Thanks for the suggestions.

It's not distemper nor anti-freeze. I've delt with distemper in a cat and it's very noticeable.

He's taking slightly more milk today than yesterday. He even picked up a dog bone and held it so were making a slight progress.

T-Bone..... ...little late, but enny chance yer puppy might've sampled some sweet tasting ANTI-FREEZE???? Its treatable in the first 24hrs but is a very dishearting death in about 3-4 days otherwize. AF is liver poison. Causes very thirsty dog.

Oh yes, best doggy up-chucker is some hydrogen-peroxide..... ...Dell BTDT

We have a Yorkie that at 6 months ate a grasshopper. She could not hold down any food after that. Finally got her to eat Cheerio's, but not much substance in them. Anyway, after five trips to our vet, then the State Lab in Ames, and a complete biopsy of all her innards, we found nothing!!! Doctor's in Ames put her on Prednizone (a steriod) and low residue dog food and she started to eat again. But, on the steroids, she gained a lot of weight, so we started to wean her off to 1/2 dose. Funny thing is, she quit throwing up EXACTLY one year later almost to the day. Never did figure out what was wrong!

T-Bone,

Did he go down in the rear quarters? Did you remember give the little guy his distemper shot?

My previous dog, a Lab, had similar symptoms as a youngster. Just before the vet opened he finally passed the dish towel and felt much better. Good luck, and if he hasn't turned the corner by tomorrow, off to the vet.

Could be a hairball. I'd just give him water for now, he can go without food for quite a while.

If he is constipated then don't give him antibotics as they will only make maters worse. Antibiotics kill the bacteria in the stomach that help break down the food.

Hi doogdoog,

Na he hasn't passed a thing. Ya I think Monday we'll take him to the Vet if he hasn't improved. I was looking for something until we can get him there.

T-Bone;We have eight wonderful dogs of various breeds. Most saved from road kill or gas chamber. We now use a Homeopathic Vet., because our experience has been extraordinarly successful in comparison to using several different local vets.We still use the local for for simple things but use Dr sheaffer ( 717 )838-9563 for persistent problems not solved by the locals. IE One of our dogs had throw up problems for two weeks with every meal. Two different vets here had no success. We called Dr Sheaffer and his first suggestion stopped the problem in Four hours.Have called on his help several times ,always with good results. He may seem a bit pricy but the results panned out to be more reasonable in the long run. This doc.mainly uses holistic and natural methods.Good luck one way or the other.

Aloha T_Bone, Yes, it sure seems that something is wrong with his pipes. Those guys will eat anything that they can get their teeth in so he must have eaten something bad. Hope he gets better.

Mahalo,
