Heating oil good as diesel?

I recently came into a surplus supply of heating oil by way of converting to a heat pump, and I recalled the comments of one seemingly knowledgeable fellow (a heating/cooling technician by trade) who said #2 heating oil would function as well as diesel in a tractor
(or any other application). I'm a bit hesitant to use it in my tractor (a Ford 1710) without corroboration from others. Care to comment?

Just to be safe, add a quart of diesel fuel additive per 50 gallons of fuel. One brand is APS, another is Shell DFA. Can get at Walley World or Tractor Supply or most all auto parts stores. I use it in EVERY drop of fuel I burn, and have for years. Raises the cetane, prevents gelling, adds lubricity, prevents corrision, reduces moisture, cleans injectors, starts easier, allows long term storage, and a whole host of other advantages.

#2 heating oil same as #2 diesel. 45 cetane and generally high sulfur. Premier diesel is 50 cetane.

We have fuel oil at work. It goes into boilers, dozers, scrapers, forklifts, welders and everything else diesel except the trucks.

We had a customer with a Ford 2110 that was using heating oil while towing his blue berry field burner and the tractor would just quit then restart and go a while and quit again. it turned out the heating oil didn't have the lubricating quality needed to lubricate the injector pump plungers. He overcame the problem by adding fuel conditioner that added lubricity to the fuel. We also had a customer with an older Ford 5000 that complained about lack of power and excessive smoke with heating oil. I had him try real diesel and he was amazed at the difference.

I have a tank in my shop with # 2 fuel oil. I use it interchangeably in the tractor & dozer as well. Never any problem. I do put some antigel in with it when it’s near zero or below. Oil dealer says it all comes from the same tank and its dyed for fuel oil or off road diesel. Not legal for on road use.

I'm new to the site so didn't realize this is an old question--thanks to all who responded.

Most of the time it is the same exact stuff - doesn't pay for the supplier to handle 2 different products. It's _possible_ the heating oil does not have the lubrisity additive package in it, so I would either blend known diesel fuel or an additive (as those mentioned, or Power Service, etc.) just to be sure.

The quantiy you have should be just fine for your tractor, but I'd go with the additive just to cover the 10% chance.....

Now that 2% biodiesel is mandated in MN, will heating oil contain it as well, or two different supply lines maintained? Haven't read anything about that.

Not only is it not a problem, they are the same fuel.

Depends on the fuel supply company. Some indeed sell fuel oil that is diesel grade, but some don't. There is a technical difference between the fuels. Diesel has more lubricating factors and lower ash content than fuel oil. Someone on this board a while ago gave a long post describing the differences.
