Thank for all of the input folks. A little more research has showed me the light. I have a friend whos family owns the local Chevy and Toyota dealership and we had a conversation the other day. You can still special order 1/2 ton Chevys with a manual floor shifter and manual linkage to the front dif and t-case. It isn't something they publically want to be known, but you can still get it. As for the Toyota Tacomas, the verdict is still out. My friend is going to ask the dealerships "Tranny Guy" as soon as he gets back from deer hunting the first of next week. This "Tranny Guy" will know exactly how it works, cause he has specialized in Chevy and Toyota tranny and t-case's for 35 years now. I don't know if any of the other manufactures would have these options, but if someone does, let me know.

I whole-heartedly agree with anyone who says that the major manufacturers should build a plain jane pickup with no unnecessary electronic garbage. I mean a manual transmission, manual t.case, lock-out hubs, reg. cab, 8ft box, no power seats, no dual climate control, no heated seats, no cruise control, no fog lights, no airbags surrounding everything, and, maybe most importantly, no electronic garbage when manual connections or linkages work way better anyway.

P.S. - I hate the way everything is made out of plastic. What ever happened to building a pickup out of steel?

You can still get a plain jane 1/2ton truck I have one '01 dodge ram 1500 4x4 manual transmission and transfer case, reg cab, 8ft box. No ac or power anything, no carpet even. My wife sells dodges and you can still buy a truck that way. Just ask you sales person they will try to find one for you or you can order it.

Buy a Toyota Tacoma if you need a small truck. Tundra if you need something bigger. If you're into pulling things maybe a Titan. They're all made in the US at US plants hiring US workers and being transported to US dealers in US trucks driven by US drivers and then being sold by US salespeople and worked on by US mechanics. All of those people are making US dollars doing it. The only people losing on the whole deal are the Japanese. The Tacoma is known as the "Hilux" in the rest of the world and is the most used and abused truck in the world. Get the 2.7L 4 cyl engine. Bulletproof.

If you can get by with a smaller truck ,not a 3/4 or 1 ton than I think you can't find anything better on the market than a Toyota. I too had many numerous problems with GM products not going to buy any of their junk anymore.

Well if your thinking about ordering a chev 1/2 ton I'd go with a GMC instead unless they don't make them like they did years ago. The older GMC where based on a chev but built just a little heavyer then the chev.

To tell you the truth, I don't think I will get a full size Chevy until the corporate offices at Detroit see the light. GM's problems are BIG now, and they cannot sell stuff because most people cannot afford new vehicles.

I hear you on the BIG problems at GM. We just got rid of a 2002 Trailblazer because of a host of quality problems, it was in the shop almost as much as it was in our garage at home. Transmission failure, a multitude of sensors, and the last strw was when the shaft broke in the power steering pump. All of this happened in 57,000 miles. The wife is now driving a brand new DODGE DURANGO.

Did you ever get any satisfaction out of the dealer on that P/S pump & the accident??? Welcome to Dodges, They have served me well for the past 14 years..

In a sense we did get some satisfaction. The repair bill was $500, since we traded for the Dodge while the Chevy was still in the shop, the dealer ate the repair bill, and still allowed slightly over blue book value on the trade. I checked the blue book myself before finallizing the deal.

Yep I understand that, I know I'll never own a brand new one unless maybe I win the lottery and even then I would probably just fix up an old one the way I would want it. The reason I said something about GMC is I had a 1971 GMC 1/2 ton and found it had a heavyer frame then the 1/2 ton chev I had

I worked in a gmc dealership in NJ in 1971 and the trucks came from the same factory as the chevy trucks. Some times they would have chevy hub caps on the gmc s. We believed they did not want to shut the assembly line down when the ran out of the right hub caps. Some times the one side would have gmc and the other side had chevy hub caps.I believe they had chevy engines in them by then also. I would be surprized if the frames were different.

only reason I found this out was because I broke the frame on my chev and was going to cut out part of the frame from the GMC and found they where not the same, the GMC was bigger and heavyer

I don't know if what you are asking is the following or not.

My brand new Dodge Ram 2500 has the transfer case shifter right there on the hump. I didn't want the $500.00 option of the electric push button.

Remember, when you are buying a car, truck, tv or whatever, you are the boss and should get what you want. If they need to change it, you should be getting the benefit.

My paint job was a $300 option but they sucked it up because they couldn't deliver a pickup without that feature and it was something I didn't order.

Consider buying a vehicle as a sporting competition where you have as much chance of winning as the dealership.

Ranger John,

Buying a vehicle USED TO BE a sporting competition, BEFORE the advent and widespread use of the internet. In the late 80's and mid-90s my wife and I bought 3 Subaru's and we had two of the local dealers in a virtual bidding war over who could sell us a car at the lowest price.

All the internet has done is facilitated price fixing. Probably better for your average buyer who was afraid to apply preasure to get a better deal, but for aggresive buyers, the internet has been a real road block. Now days, the manufacturers and the dealers and the customers are all looking at the same prices on the internet - so it is virtually impossible to get dealers to move off of any particular mark they have set. The only thing you can be sure of is that the price they have set is lucrative for them - even if it is at or slightly above the "dealer's cost", with all the bonuses and incentives they get from the manufactures for volume of sale compared to the dealership down the road, etc.

The only thing I will add is that you should do all the research possible BEFORE you even talk to a dealer. Quite often you will know about options that the dealer isn"t aware of.

The only thing I disagree with is talking to a dealer. I have various friends that work a dealerships, and I knew 3 months in advance that this "employee pricing for everyone" was going to happen this year. Do you think that a saleman was going to say "If you wait 3 months I can save you a few thousand dollars". The internet is a great and terrible thing, but it all comes back to who you know.

Ranger John - refer to parts 1 and 2 of "are there any trucks left?" and you will see what I mean. You are on the right track.
