Any way to tell these three apart by looking at them?

No there is not any way to tell them apart they all look the same on the out side how ever if you take them apart the pistons will be stamped on the inside with C.I. size (352,360,390,406,410,427)
I have had lots of Ford 352,390,360 & one 406

You can tell a 427 block from the outside by the extra cross bolts in the block for the center three main bearing caps. I put one in a 1968 Mustang GT.

Almost no outside clues to tell you what you have. If you are very lucky, the aluminum ID tag will still be on the intake manifold in the coil bracket area. This lists CID. Later ones had a decal on the left valve cover or aircleaner with the same information.

I have been dogging after some external clues to whether I am looking at a 360 or 390. The best I have come with is to measure the stroke by removing a spark plug and placing a dowel in the cylinder, turning the motor by hand and measuring the difference. Here we go again. Thanks for the replys, and curses to ford for not stamping these motors somewhere.

I guess the best way to tell is install them in a truck and go for a ride, you will know for sure which one is the 390.

If you can pull the oil pans, check the casting numbers on the cranks. Check the Ford F.E. forum for the cross reference.
