The unit code is all you need to know. It will tell you month, day, year and shift. If it doesn't have a unit number, then you have to go to a serial number book. I searched the Ford forum for unit number and someone had asked about a Ford 5000 with Unit # 8F04B. So, our first digit is the last number of the year, 1968. Next in line is the letter. The letter stands for the month of production. A= Jan, B= Feb., C=Mar, D=Apr, E=May, F=June, G=July, H=Aug, skip I, J=Sept, K=Oct, L=Nov, M=Dec. I am pretty sure about skipping the I b/c it looks like a one. That is the only part I am a little nervous about. The next two digits are the date in the month. So, it would be June 4th. The last letter of the unit number it either an A or B. A is day shift and B is night shift. So, with this info, you should be able to go to any Ford and know when it was produced. Problems arise when you get to a model, such as the 6610. Its production ran from 81-82? until 93. If unsure when the year is, look to the injection pump. Series II have a rotor pump, while the others have an inline pump. If you have any questions feel free to email me.
