I am going to be installing the wet sleeves in my JD 4030 and they say to use liquid (lubricant) soap to make the sleeves slide past the sealing rings and JD recomends using their soap but what brand of soap would work just as good? Thanks

Once used a cheap liquid dishwashing soap and it rusted the block up something terrible. Bought the JD soap and never regretted it. chris

I got to go with the vegtable oil, works great, and after you put the o ring on the sleeve take a very small screw driver and run it around under the o ring a few times slowly, and I mean a very small screw driver, like you would carry in your shirt pocket..

I used Ivory bar soap and some water. Worked just fine. They specify soap for this application so that is what I would use.

Anything slippery is fine in reply to Willy p, 11-29-2005 18:45:42
The reason why Deere and other companies call for soap is for one reason. The sleeve sealing rings - (with Deere it's the red ring - not the black) - are designed to swell once petroleum comes in contact with them. So, they want you to use something that is slippery but inert so the o-ring doesn't start to swell before the sleeve is in place.
Engine oil works fine if you're fast. But, if you screw up and take too long - the o-ring swells and you'll damage it. Best thing is - first make sure the block is cleaned well enough so the sleeve pushes or falls easily into place (before the o-rings are installed). Once you know the sleeve goes in easy, then install the o-rings and soap everything up (any non-petroleum base soap is fine). Then, you will now that the only opposition you feel when pushing in the sleeve is the o-rings themselves. This way, is something is not going right - you know it's an o-ring problem.

I did a few of those wet sleeve JD engines and I figured that after I spent all that money on a JD engine kit another $10.00 or whatever it costs for their soap was cheap insurance. I still have about a full QT. bottle left if you are anywhere near Ashland Ohio stop by and I'll give you some.

Not gonna say it won't work without causing problems because obviously it's been tried, but personally I'd steer away from using any kind of oil, be it cooking oil or whatever. I say this because oil and water don't mix together very well, even in small quantities. Since the cooling system doesn't get hot enough to "burn" the oil off this could cause two things to happen seperately or together. One the oil will create a film on the metal surfaces which will cause a decrease in the heat transferrence, and that's the last thing you want to happen around a liner. Two the oil and water could mix/emulsify causing a pocket of sludge which will also create a hot spot with a low heat transfer.---With dish soap it's designed to disolve in the water. By the time you fill the coolant system the first time with plain water and run it long enough to leak test it the soap and water will have mixed. This gives an added bonus because the soap is designed to cut oil and hold onto it. This means any oil that may have gotten into the system at the machine shop, during building, or whatever, will be flushed out when you drain everything. This way your assured that when you fill the system with clean water and antifreeze you've got a system that's pretty much as clean as you can get.---With that said I've been building engines for years and have never really given thought to which brand, specifically, worked better. If I need a bottle I tend to buy the whatever is on sale, and have never had an engine come back. I believe what's on the shelf presently is what's left of a bottle of JOY that's about a year old. Good luck with the rebuild.
