Well I went into town last night to pick up a couple bladder tanks, 24" round x 60" long, about 100# each, that I ordered and loaded them in the pickup bed with the tailgate down.

Ran a 2" and a 1" ratchet strap over the top of them. I just got onto the Interstate and they came off my pick-up. Apparently the 1" strap broke and letting the 2" strap slide off.

Thank GOD no one was hurt. 4 babies in the mini-van.

Three cars latter, two front end damage and one mini-van with rear bumper damage and four cops. The guy behind me missed both tanks, figure that one out. The one lady hit the one tank and spun it into the back of the mini-van.

I wondered why all the cops and found out there counted as three seperate accidents as there not "vehicle" connected to each other. Had I rearended and pushed 3 cars into each other then it would have been one accident.

My insurrance company said they will count them as one accident. No rate increase as I'm 20yr accident and ticket free with them.

I got a ticket for "load falling onto roadway" $480. I was told to take it before the judge as he won't hit me with the full fine. Cop said he could have written me 3 seperate tickets since it was 3 different accidents. I never heard of that one before.

The tanks are not covered with my truck insurrance as they were not attached to the vehicle and considered personal property contents.

One tank took all the hits. Even ripped out the 1-1/4" pipe nipple and a nice 2" slit in the tank. Still had a precharge of air tho. The other tank had a ding on the dome but thats it. So that cost me $760 for one pressure tank.

Just thought this might be of interest to the group. I'm gonna buy a cargo net and use it next time!

One evening I had the family in our 23' motor home. We were leaving town for a short trip along with everyone else, it seemed. All three lanes were full and going 65 mph or better. I was in the center lane. To my right was a pickup pulling a fifth wheel trailer. In the back of the pickup were a couple of dogs. Just ahead of me was another pickup with a dog in the back. As we in the center lane slowly passed the truck and fifth wheel, the dog in the back of the truck ahead of me wandered over to have a look at the dogs in the back of the truck in the next lane. I remember thinking to myself, "I wonder if that dog is smart enough to realize we're all moving at a high rate of speed or if he thinks those other dogs are just sitting there waiting for him to come visit." Sure enough the idiot canine jumps from the truck to go over and see his new pals. BOOM! he hits the ground and starts rolling down the white dotted line. Everyone is on the brakes and trying to swerve ever so slightly to try to miss Fido and still not side-swipe the vehicles in the next lane. It turned out OK, the traffic in the right lane was able to stop and the dog survived the tumble. I saw him in the mirror trotting over to the shoulder while the his owner was frantically trying to get his truck pulled over to the right. It was very exciting for a few moments, but no one was hurt.

T-Bone, You went through a haulers worst nightmare I bet when those things hit the road and vehicles started trying to avoid them. Glad that it didnt get any worse than it was. We can all learn from that one since you are a long time hauler yourself and particular about how you do things. Thanks for reminding us that we are close to the edge when hauling anything.

I had a situation just like Steve Crum described happen to Me about 5 yrs ago. Part of a plastic kid's play house blew out of a pickup ahead of me about 150 feet doing 70 mph. Good Friday it was, traffic was kinda heavy. I managed to swerve into the Median on I-94 but not before the plastic, about 4 ft X 5 ft hit My bumper, busted My grill, and shattered My windshield. Person driving the other pickup didn't even know They lost anything. Person with a Cell Phone (Bless them!) called in the accident. I call the State Police when I got home and They were expecting My call. Not sure if the Lady driving the other truck got a ticket but I hope so. The plastic was tied in Her truck with gift wrapping ribbon. I know it cost Her insurance co. about $2500 to fix My truck, and I didn't even have the expensive dent fixed! It was very minor, hardly noticable and I didn't want the body shop screwing with My truck's paint! They would have had to paint most of the right front fender, the hood, and part of the door. The body shop screwed-up everything else they touched, and some other stuff besides so I'm glad they didn't "FIX" anything else!

Early this past spring, my daughter and I were going south on US 220 (4 lane section) and in the passing lane. A pick up truck in the north bound lane was also in the passing lane and the fiberglass cap lifted and blew off his truck. It sailed over the median and hit upside down on the road in front of us and bounced and went airborn again. I reached over and shoved my daughter's head into her lap (teenager) and the cap flew over the car missing us by not much more than a coat of paint. An 18 wheeler not far behind made short work of the cap. The guy that lost it was stopped almost 6 miles on up the road for speeding when several calls came in about the incident with the cap. Ain't cell phones great?
There were several charges brought including reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident. As I understood, the guy tried to claim he didn't know he lost the cap, so the judge pointed out that if he is so unaware of what is going on around him while he's driving, maybe he should not be driving. Thankfully the only damage in the whole fiasco besides the guy's wallet, was 6 tires on the 18 wheeler and the cap itself. No injuries happened but it could have been ugly.

T-Bone, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. In 19 years as a cop and DOT inspector I've seen a LOT of stuff allegedly "securely" strapped or chained come flying off cars and trucks. Thos little 1" ratchet straps we all love so much are supposed to have a WWL of 1500lbs according to the tag on the strap. I don't buy it for a second. I figure more like 300 lbs is reasonable. But, the law says if the tag reads 1500lbs, thats what it's good for. I use the straps but I have about 15 of them so I add a couple extra on any load I'm carrying. You guys that think you get hit harder becasue you have a CDL should see what happens when a cop and DOT inspector looses a load. Not only does the Judge pop you, the job goes after you too! So if CDL holders are held to a higher standard I guess it goes double for cops. Such is life. I will now prepare myself for the 2 dozen "bad cop" posts that will follow.

I remember a safety poster from shop class in school (although this applies to a lot of things) "I always thought accidents happened to the other guy until I realized that to the other guy I WAS the OTHER GUY!". I'm kind of suprised that the people hit that roll of steel, that's hard to miss. I guess they were looking at something else or overdriving their lights. We had that happen here although the car got hit as the roll uncoiled.

I was working on a kitchen for a lady once. She went to a neighboring town to get a new electric range. The store loaded it in her pickup and pushed it up next to the cab. On her way home the stove was sucked out of the pickup (tailgate was closed)while she was driving down the highway at 60 mph. She didn't even realize it was gone until she got home, got out of her pickup and no stove. She went back out on the road and found it about 15 miles away on the side of the road still in the box but busted up pretty good.

Sorry to hear about that, I am alway"s so paranoid almost about stuff getting loose and coming off the truck or the trailer, when people drive so close that they will hit stuff, even when they saw it coming off the trailer for a mile or so, they still stay behind it, never figured that one out, you might be like me, when I strap a tractor, or the bobcat or anything else down the tires squat down good, good lesson to get rid of the little straps and stick with the 2 inch ones..

Hi Kevin,

I've never felt comfortable using straps to tie heavy equipment down. I always use 3/8" chain as I just feel better.

Safe working load of the 1" strap that I used had a 15oolb rating and had the good style ratchet head. The strap is gone so I'm only guessing it broke. It was in good shape tho and only securring a 200# load.

The tanks were inside of thin cardboard box's then rapped in plastic together side by side. That in it's self "may" have been a contributing factor as to handle just the bare metal tank is very difficult (very slick) because of the tank shape and paint with no hand holds.

The tanks just as well could have squirted out of the bottom of the box's but you would think the 1" strap would be there.

In any event it's all my fault as I should have tied them down differently. You can bet the next load will get triple checked a couple times :)

I guess my fingers typed in strapped instead of chained, yea, I agree, I never use anything but chains and binders with equipment, I kind of figure you should be able to tip the trailer upside down with a crain and the load should stay right where it was at..

No matter how bad it was, it always could be worse. A few days ago on I-35 in Minnesota, a couple were killed when they hit a 21,000# roll of aluminum that had fallen from a truck.

Here's a link to the story.

T_Bone,
You are one of the guys we don't think things like this happen to. Goes to show, no matter how professional we are, things can still slip by us and we always need to be on guard. Very thankful for you it wasn't worse and someone hurt, and I am sure you are also. Hurts to have a ding on that driving record though, huh? I had a similiar record till I got a ticket in a trap. Found out they treat CDL's different than regular license and adjucation has no meaning with them.

Hi Skipper,

It shocks me that I made it this far without a chargeable accident or ticket. Man with the way people drive I'm just on a bananna peal waiting to slip at any time :)

Ohh and I don't have a CDL.

T_Bone, ouch! Probably not worth the deductible and possible rate increase, but your homeowners" insurance is what covers vehicle contents. I collected $9k for contents after a fire in my van.
