Use one of these or you should be jailed.

TWB2012DR Panel/LinkŪ
The Panel/Link TWB includes a 200A main circuit breaker interlinked with a 30A - 125A generator breaker feeding a heavy-duty copper bus with feed-through lugs. The interlinked circuit breakers keep the generator isolated from the utility at all times, even with the deadfront removed. The TWB is suitable for service entrance and may be used as a main panel or feed-through to a sub-panel or main panel. The TWB has provision for 4/8 branch circuits and is ideal for applications requiring the entire service panel to be available for generator power.

Thanks for the equipment info. I printed it out in case I ever install a generator (which I doubt). This did come to mind, however. My power went off one time and inasmuch as power failures here are rare and then finding out that my neighbors all had power, I called Wis Pub Serv & asked them why they had cut off my power. The lady told me politely but firmly "we never cut off anyone's power"! Crew came out and fixed problem in about 30 min. Turned out it was a crack in a unit mounted on the transformer pole that, in the words of the lineman, "is the thing that protects us from you". A reverse current device that had no moving parts. I had no idea there was such a thing in place but am not surprised considering all of the electrical geniuses online that use generators. Thanks again.

JAILED? What for? I use a generator and have extension cords that play into the house and hook up the needed appliances, heaters, lights etc to those extensions. I am very well versed on load or amperage to avoid overloading any of the generator circuits so why should I be jailed? Maybe you should rephrase your comment to read anyone that would connect a generator to a house circuit without having it properly installed should be jailed. In fact they would be STUPID to do so. I have been doing this for over thirty years and so far it has worked and not one lineman has ever been hurt because I am not hooked to the house in any way.

Reading your post, I would go with B&D.
You expressly misquoted what you had done, by saying you had hooked up your "basement power".
Electricians, particularly linesmen are a might touchy - understandable - about that sort of hook-up.
You should not even post it like that, even if you are safe, as there are some reading this board who might just electrocute one or more line repair men by emulating what they think you have done (according to your initial post).
Perhaps you should read your initial post again. Carefully.

RAB, Sorry, What is basement power? I never mentioned that so it must be a regional phrase. I NEVER connect my generator to any outlets in my home and connect lights and appliances to the extension cords coming directly from the generator OUTSIDE the house. There is NOTHING unsafe about this method of generator use. I have re-read my post and stick by it.

Please be clearer in the future. There is nothing like dying or worse yet living as a cripple because some cheap and stupid *ss back fed an electrical system with his standby generator.

I worked 42 yrs in steam power electrical generating stations and am well aware of the dangers of hooking a generator to a house system without an approved transfer switch. When a power company turns the power on to a dead line that has a nonprotected generator, it destroys the generator unless it is in sync with the main power grid. (it wont be in syc without the proper controls) As I said, my cords come into the house FROM the OUTSIDE and all things needed are plugged into them. That is pretty clear to me?

Aloha, It's good that you have back up power but remember to open the main breaker if you are back feeding. Don't want to zap the lineman.

You can keep the snow out your way.

Watch out for carbon monoxide from exhaust! Also, don't electrocute the repairman working on the powerline.

I also have a welder/genset (Miller) and they sure come in handy.

Keep warm
