My reference info (the parts catalog) is not here at the moment. The earliest Model 140 (1958?) was 6 volt generator. Then they were equipped with 12 volt generator (by 1966?). In the latter years of the 1970's, the charging system was 12 volt alternator.

Wayne--I have the data book on IH and it does not have the 140 in there but the farmall 100,130, 200, 230, 300 were all 6 volt, so I'm sure the 140 was also 6 volt--al bane

al: Bus Driver has it right, they went from 6 volt generator in 58 to 12 volt generator sometime in the 60s and ended production in the 70s with 12 volt alternator.
