Since we're off topic and don't talk tractors on tractor talk, I thought I'd ask why that is?

There are brand specific boards for you'll that can't stand to talk about the weather or dogs or cars.

Often I find the OT posts interesting, hope they keep on just the way it has been going.

There was definitely a drop in the OT posts when the new one showed up (just below on the menu) but no doubt about it, lately they are becoming more frequent again. I think we can all live with OT stuff like gophers scaring your German Shepherd dog or the guy next door using your fenceposts for firewood, but some of the stuff is definitely very OT and it's getting more common. The reason of course that guys gravitate here with OT posts is because the post gets more attention and greater response. Actually, I like that new forum down below and although I don't post there much, I find it interesting and entertaining and it's not all ugly either, a lot of it is just good fun. I think more of us SHOULD make an effort to use that new forum for a lot of the OT stuff but we'll never solve the problem (if it is a problem) so I guess we'll continue to talk about it. It's sort of like the donations to the website here, it is suggested and appreciated if you do contribute (which I'm sure many of us do) but there will always be those that don't for one reason or another. Anyways, I'd have to say I'm in agreement with your concern.

I've given this a lot of thought lately and I've come to this conclusion.I refer to those who frequent this site as my "over the fence" neighbours. I've been told that years ago,my grandfather and our next door neighbour stopped to rest their teams late one afternoon, started talking over the line fence and as the sun started to rise the next morning , they thought it was time to say goodbye. That's how I look at those on this site and I respect their opinions and advice. Two weeks ago to-day, when I lost my wife,I just had to "talk" to my neighbours and was very heartend by their compassion and understanding. Absolutely priceless !!!

It seems to work ok, maybe the forum title is not a perfect fit as people change the subject more. I think this particular heading is more of a convienent place to get to, the other new ones are not in the same column, people have been drifting off topic here for a long time. When you scroll down, you can find what may or may not interest you, go where you like within that discussion, always a click away to wherever. Obviously there has to be some parameters but it seems most people are very polite and friendly within these internet communities, very little policing is necessary, too bad a lot of people are not like that elsewhere. I always thought that if anyone is really bothered by O/T discussions and the supporting website is not short on space, there was no problem, maybe the reader has too much time on their hands to worry about such inane things, but that is a matter of opinion so I'll leave it be.

I have been wondering about that myself. We already have two boards which were set up just for the purpose of discussing subjects not related to tractors. In my opinion the tractor talk forum is supposed to be for asking questions and discussing tractors of all brands, with an occasional off-topic subject thrown in. I do know that if a topic is labeled as OT, I do not have to open and read it, but when the entire first page of tractor talk is devoted to an off topic subject I get just a little miffed.

as long as i have been around this has always been a place for 3 things. off topic posts, will my tractor do it/best tractor for me, and new tractors without their ownboard such as nortrac. the new forum is bescause of the political wars and dirty comments. real tractor questions usually go on the brand forum. ie on my john deere 6030 where is the rear end drain plug usually that goes on the john deere discussion board. that is the way it has been for a long time and nothing is wrong with it as long as the subject says o/t. if you dont like o/t dont read them, with out o/t this board would be slow and if slow poeple wouldnt check as often and withtout the people without the knowledge this board woudlnt be as good as it is.

Talking tractors day in and day out gets old. Now talking with friends about events in my life is something new every day. You get others point of view and let them know how you are doing.

I think the new category was started to give the political and flame fanners a place to have their freedom of speech without ruining a good board.

I kinda like the O/T posts. There are a lot of folks who just need someone else's opinion sometime. The tractor talk is always available and lots of gracious and knowledgeable people will offer thier advice if that is the topic. The off topic posts don't seem to be a bad thing.

Just my 2 cents worth!

As long as it's not political or some other topic that goes downhill fast,I don't see a problem with it..

I like the OT posts on this board makes for intresting reading. If you go to the OT board you will find nothing but meaness, unless you are a right winger. anyone slightly left of the far right wall gets shutdown insulted and abused.
