I asked about moving a 16x80 mobile home with my IH 660. Responses varied from be careful to you must be crazy. The you must be crazy's were the most accurate. The 660 front end was too light (hitch load of over 7000 lbs) and the drawbar didn't like it. No damage done. The house was in a very tight spot. We ended up ganging up on it with a Cat 426 backhoe and the 660. It was a case of lift as much as possible and drag it on blocks between the hitch and the ground. It is now out on the road with a tandem axle truck to take it the 15 miles to its new spot. It will be VERY easy to back it in to the new spot. Thanks for the help. P.S. The previous thread was eliminated.

Interesting comments. I don't know a thing about moving mobile homes, but seeing you guys comments about the weight of the makes me wonder how much a regular house of comparable size weighs. I notice around here when they move a regular house they take the bricks off first, though I think I've seen some moved with bricks on.

Lately I have seen some use a very small remote controlled crawler of some sorts to set mobile homes. I don't see how it is heavy enough but they work ?

I`ve moved a few with my 706 , never needed to wave to the spectators as the frontend of the tractor did it for me .

Hi Paul,

Glad to see you made "good" progress. I pulled a 14x75 from Grand Jct, Co to Phoenix, AZ and it looked like such a simple task but I can tell you I never will do that again. Colorado has 14ft lanes from the center line to the roadway edge.

The most exciting part of the trip came on a grade called "slick rock pass". Colorado required a single pilot car so I sent the pilot car up to the top of the grade with instructions to block the 2-lane roadway with there vehicle. I get the call to head up the 7 mile grade.

I using all the roadway from guardrail to the side of the mountain to make the corners. I'm on a sharp right hand corner with my single DRW tractor in the left lane in the dirt burm and the rear of the trailer just missing the righthand guardrail by a few inchs, when I look up to see a semi a coming down the mountain.

I'm maybe hitting 10mph and have no more torque left to go faster. I keep watching the guardrail trying to get my tractor back into my lane and quickly see this isn't gonna happen, so I open my door just incase.

I got my tractor over the center line but my trailer is still in the left lane when the trucker comes around the last corner and see's my trailer.

He sets his trailer brakes to lock and heads towards the shoulder of the road and as he's passing my tractor, I can see the overhanging rocks rip open the top of his trailer. I keep watching in my mirror to see his trailer pass the rear corner of my trailer by 4".

I'm stinking pretty bad by this time. :)

I get to the top of the mountain and find a pull off about 30 miles down the road as you can't just pull off anywhere you want.

The trucker had ran the road block being he was the fourth vehicle back. I asked the pilot car if he blocked the road as I had requested? Nope! he didn't think it necessary!!!

I would have fired my Dad (pilot car) but I needed him to get to the Co/Az border. :)

AZ didn't require a pilot car for this load and has 16ft roadways or just like being on a 4 lane road when comparred to Co.

One day some year, you may look back and chuckle about that, since all turned out ok in the big picture. I could be wrong though.

I remember when most toters were 1600 - 1800 series IH. A big one was a 2000 series IH diesel. These days are bigger heavier KWs, Freightliners and the sort. I guess there's probably a good reason for that. 2x6 construction, 16'x80' lengths and stuff. Guess times and quality have changed. Had a buddy that inherited a '57 Chevy 1.5 ton with a huge gas 6 cylinder that was built as a toter when was new. Back then highways were two lane through the mountains with the only room for error being over the edge and down the side. Ha Ha Ha Ha, no way. I just aint that brave.

I pulled them for a living for awhile was really a lot of fun and got to see a lot of the country. Worse thing that ever happened was when the axles came out from under a 12X70 half of a double wide and I was running down the road at around 65MPH. When I got the truck stopped the front bumper was on the center line and the back end of the home was hanging over a ditch then was a good 15 feet deep. I had the highway blocked for 8 hours and was even in the late night news.

Ive had that happen! I was up near Detroit Mi, with a 16X80, only 4 axles on it. I was up on I69 and all tires on the right side blew out, right in front of a bridge. Had to have all 4 axles replaced along side of the road, one lane blocked, and alot of unhappy drivers. Have you seen that commercial for the movie The Weather Man? Where someone throws their drinks, or food on him? Yep,,, got hit a few times with a cold soda. I was on the road for 9 hours sitting. Was just abut dark when it was done fixed, parked that big ol trailer in a small truck stop. Wasnt ticketed, or anything, Michigan DOT was good to me that day. Worst part was I only had 3 spare tires left,,, I used them all up until they all blew at once. CHadS

I remember loading up the proper colored siding and driving a day or two to go repair a couple of mishaps. I'd forgotten about it until now, but once was sent out to change a couple of axles while the 14x65 was still cocked in a ditch. 18 years old and under a trailer with a bottle jack and 2x4's to change axles and put on new tires while it teetered. Mmm? Looking back on it, that was pretty stupid "Yep, I'll go do it" on my part.

You made the news, huh? Not always a good thing to do.

Shoot in that case it wasn't a big deal. I didn't get a ticket and it wasn't my fault that the axles came out from under it. It was brand new and only a few hours out of the factory. They just didn't have enough axles under it, there where only 2 and it should have had 3 or 4 under it as heavy as it was.

Hi old,

Ya, I didn't like it very much the first 60miles as it was alot of consentration from just pulling the small trailers.

After a 200miles and the "pass" incident then it wasn't too bad but I quickly knew this was not the way to make a living.

I had the dealer throw in 8 extra tires as I was told I'd blow a few tires in 650 miles. The only tire I blew out was when I dropped the tire off the pavement edge. It really supreised me when I could feel the blowout on a 4 axle trailer.

Me, I'll leave this type of driving to the professionals as it's just not worth the headaches.

I remember another time I pulled one didn't want to but the boos said do it. We had 30 plus MPH winds and in the ST. charles area of Missouri I was takeing up 2 lanes of the highway. The truck was in one lane and the end of the trailor was in the other lane sort of looked like this l/l, and Iwas going the speed limit also. Wasn't any fun but hey I made it with that one. LOL
