The starter just stuck on my tractor and was finally able to get the battery cable loose. Solenoid was starting to smoke and get hot. Is this a solenoid problem? Can I just pull it off or do I have to take off the whole starter? Are there just three bolts on the starter or another one on the back that is hard to get to? Thanks, Craig Wooten

What I used for many years before I finally broke down and bought the starter wrench was a 12" extension and a 9/16"-3/8" drive- 12 point socket stuck on the extension only part way .Not so far that the ball in the extension engaged the socket.Wobble end extensions work fairly well too.

The contacts in the solenoid have probably welded together so the solenoid will need replaced, but I would also check to see that the starter drive gear is free on the starter shaft. Its the little copper contact that engages the drive gear before the main contacts start the starter turning.

JD sells a specially-formed wrench to get the hidden bolt out. Twenty years ago it cost about $11. Well worth it if you take it out more than once. Near impossible to reach with socket and extensions.

There are three bolts. The whole starter should be taken off and checked. Also the batteries, when they get low and there is alot of load, the low voltage tends to weld the starter contacts.

The problem ended up being the starter. The solenoid didn't fix it. I just could not believe a year old starter could go bad. Kicked right off and shut off when I was finished. Thanks for your help. Craig Wooten
