I have an opportunity to get a good deal on a 6000 ford with a select o speed tranny. THe tractor will not move. I know these trannys had many problems, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience working on them and what could be the main problems in them and possibly tips on building them. I will not use this tractor very much, so I am not looking for it to be a work horse or nothing. I just thought I might rake some hay or something with it. Any comments or advice will be appreciated

Thanks,

Vann Bradford

Vann, if you are interested, we have a 6000 diesel, selecto-speed tractor for parts. Tractor is missing the rear wheels and original engine, the rest is there along with a parts engine, extra head with fairly new injectors front factory weights etc. If you or any one is interested. We live in southwestern PA.

Does the power take off work? If it does not, It most likely is the torque limiter or input shaft bad. Note that the will turn when not engaged.
Can the tractor be towed. If it can the disconnect is disengaged.
It could be as simple as a stuck valve spool in the transmission or it could be very expensive to fix. Some parts are not available.

1. Post on Ford Board
2. Don't ever call it a "tranny"

Don"t understand what"s wrong with "tranny"??? In my hot rodding days (many years ago), we always pulled the "tranny", or blew the "tranny". What happened? Why is this now a "bad" word to use for transmission? I"m guessin` we can no longer call carburators "jugs" either :)

Stan(PA),
In my really young days a "tranny" was a transistor radio. Latterly it was a term for a Ford Transit Van. If these young whippersnappers want to refer to something else, let "em!! I really couldn"t bother less!

Stan, it sounds like you are old enough to be waitng for the guys in white coats to be stopping by your place to take you to the Soylent Green Factory! Jugs and trannys mean something entirely different nowadays.

Vern, please don"t tell them where I live! The "trannys" thing never even entered my feeble mind, til you mentioned it. Now I get it, and man, do I feel stupid, especially since I"ve been to both New Orleans and San Francisco several times. More "trannys" in either of those places than there ever was in Detroit! Guess I just wasn"t thinking right ....Stan

I think Stan and I are about the same vintage- not quite ready for the morgue yet, but closer than many. I'll bite- the "jugs" slang is an obvious problem, but what is the latest corruption of the word "tranny?" You youngsters have some moral obligation to keep us old guys from becoming completely out of touch, you know.

Could be anything from a broken torque plate to anything in the box. However, that said SOS"s can be delightful to play with. Really depends on how it has been looked after, but they are getting long in the tooth! Just buyer beware! If they could sell it fixed, it would fetch more, so why are they not doing that?

RUN FAST....VERY FAST!

Just kidding. I could be as simple as a busted cable. When you move the shifter, does it feel like it is shifting between gears????
