Just checked the antifreeze in my Ford 8N and noticed black oil mixed in with the antifreeze. Any idea if this is a problem or maybe just needs drained and flushed. Any suggestions.

Just flushed radiator and refilled with coolant. Oily film still appearing at top of radiator. Did not notice any coolant in the oil however. Would it be harmful to run it this way? If the head gasket needs replaced, how hard is it to repair yourself? Any special tools required? Never done one before. Any help appreciated.

Maybe a weak head gasket or it maybe just from age. Some say you can start it up with the cap off and look for bubbles if theres bubble they say you need a head gasket.

The correct way to check for leaking head gasket, is to take off the fan/waterpump belt, then run the engine at medium idle, and watch for lots of bubbles. If you don't take off the belt, the water pump will create bubbles, giving a false reading! RJ

Bubbles can indicate gasket failure around combustion chamber. The coolant will slowly?become acidic also. Oil can get in without that type of failure.
Eventually, you may find coolant can flow the other way (when the coolant system is hot and pressurised, and the oil pressure is zero). Unless you can find another reason for the contamination, it would be prudent to change out the gasket before lasting damage occurs.
Could it be a core plug leaking very slightly? (if cooling system is running unpressurised). Not likely but....
Regards, RAB
