My 8N tractor's clutch is suddenly GONE.Clutch will not stop the PTO nor will it let me put in any gear. This happened like overnight. Am going to try to adjust at linkage. Anyone ever experience this, or have any ideas as to what the help happened?

Well, this happened after the tire went flat, and it did sit for about a month. It wont start in gear, so I guess I'll try pulling the thing with my truck. If all else fails, I just might run it in to a tree, or the SKS may come in to play.
Thanks Guys!

If it is a side distributor you can open the timing hole on the bellhousing and spray brake cleaner on the clutch. You may have to get creative by bending the plastic tube but this should help. This also helps when you have a jumpy clutch.
If it is a front distributor you can acomplish the same thing by removing the starter.

Good Luck and N-JOY!!!

Ask "OLD" if you can borrow his SKS and shot the thing loose. Hey OLD, can he borrow your rifle when you get that thing sighted in?

Same thing happened to mine. One day clutch wouldn't release. So, I acted on the advice of an old tractor guy who told me to start tractor in 4th gear, drive down the driveway and, after a bit, hit ONE of the brake pedals. The idea was to twist the tractor a little, jar the plates apart. If that didn't work, try running it into a tree. The impact might loosen the plates, too. Well, I didn't have to run it into the tree because the first method worked. Now I place a small block between the clutch pedal and the tractor's frame when not in use. Hasn't happened since. Sure glad I didn't have to resort to plan B.

If it happened overnite i really doubt the clutch plates are stuck together. On one Oliver i had this happen, and the clutch plate had come apart, and was dragging on the flywheel enough that the clutch would not slip, even with the brakes held down and clutch depressed. I think your likely gonna need a new clutch.

If I park my 8N over night with out a block on the clutch pedel it will lock up. Its very common on the ford Ns.

I had that happen with my Deere and I ended up replacing the clutch.

Do you mean the clutch is stuck and because of that you can't put it in gear? If so thats a common problem. What you need to do is block/tie the clutch pedel down for a day or so, then if you have a nice open area start it in gear if you can, then just sit back and go for a long drive with the clutch pedel down. Most of the time it will pop loose fast but I've seen times where you had to drive for an hour or so. Just be sure that theres a lot of room to drive and you don't have anything in your way since you will not be able to stop till it pops loose. If you can't start it in gear you can start it up idle it down low and ez it in to gear and do the same thing. Just be careful when you do that. Also from now on keep the pedel blocked down, I use a cement block on my 8N

Sounds like the clutch plates may be frozen together (though I think this usually happens after the machine sits for a while).

Without the machine running, put it in gear, depress the clutch and pull the tractor with another tractor or truck to see if the plates will break apart.
