I was looking at history it said that 9n and 2n han a front mount dist. and in1948 the 8n had a side mount dist, my old beauty has a front mount dist. now I'm not sure if I have a 2n or 8n could someone please help me on this. GENE Tx.

Check the link below and you should be able to pin it down. Early 8N's all had front distributors. Side distributors appeared around mid-1950 if memory serves. The link will tell you for sure.

Sometimes these old tractors are just mutts, having been pieced together from several other tractors.

Early 8N"s can still have a front mount distributor, versus the later 8N"s that had the side mount. Since yours does have the 4 speed transmission, it is definitely an 8N. One quick way to tell an early 8N from a later is the presence of a proofmeter (or tachometer) on the lower right side of the dash. Only the later 8N"s will have the proofmeter. 8N"s were made starting in late 47" through 52"...so by using these clues you should be able to narrow it down. Hope this helps!

All 9/2 and 8N motors are interchangeable,so it may have been swapped sometime, engine serial number is on 1x4 square boss just below head gasket,in front of starter.. 9/2N's had 3 speed trannys,8N had 4 forward speeds..9/2N's have big bolt pattern wheels,8N's have small pattern..there is an actual date stamped on alum. cover on bottom of differential, this may help to date the rest of the tractor..

Look at the date on the bottom of alum. hydraulic pump under differential.. it will have a date stamped like 5-12-48 these are not commonly changed out so it should tell ya when the pump was made, tractor was probably assembled a few weeks or months later..

Gene, I went back and read your original post again, all 1948 8N's were front dist. models..I think they changed to side mount in late 49 for the 50 models..
