Can I use a 12 volt voltage regulator that was used with a 12 volt generator on a 12volt alternator?

Kenneth, a Generators (DC Voltage) Voltage Regulator regulates how much effective Field Current flows through the gennys Field windings plus serves as a cutout relay to connect the genny to the load once its voltage exceeds that of the battery, but disconenct it otherwise like when the tractors off so the battery dont reverse discharge through the genny. An alternator (AC Voltage) is a whole different animal using slip ring type "brushes" and the rotor induces AC voltage into the Stator. I agree theres no way (unless totally modified and redesigned) you can hook up a DC VR to an alternator n make it work properly.

Why not use an internally regulated Alternator?? Most are for Negative ground remember.
