Know some farmers who have had close ones with ammonia? Here is a link to an incident where I know some of the people involved.

Had an icnident in west Michigan, recently where someone stealing ammonia left the valves open. Farmer lost a number of cows, and a several more were injured, and had to be put down. That stuff is just plane hazardous. There is a die that can be mixed with the ammonia, which renders it useless to meth makers, and stains their hands, clothes, etc. Awfully expensive however. Bet the farmers who come in contact with it get stained too!

Some 30 years or so back, our fire company had a regular carnival. On my way home from work, i had to drop something off before the evenings festivities started, so, i went in the man door on the lower level. I got about 20 feet inside, and got a whiff of ammonia gas! Now, in the back of the basement, we had a gas refrigerator, can't remember the name now, and it had sprung a leak! Nobody could get near it, and folks had to go inside the upstairs, which was starting to smell, too! I called the chief, and he had 3 men suit up in air masks, and one backed his pickup inside back to that fridge! They tilted it up, and drove out with it, and dumped it far away from the bldg! Luckily nobody was hurt by it. Then they ran the big exhaust fan for an hour and that cleaned up the basement. RJ

Distant neighbor got a drop in his eye, not so good vision now.

I got a drop/frozen on my thumb, that skin likes to break down & chap moreso in the harsh winters - not sure of the relation, but seems so.

Have had a few tanks blow out around the area, no big bad issues.

The coop had the big tank hose blow (well, a worker ripped it off...) in the small town some years ago, no big hurt but a lot of people had to move for a few hours, lots of commotion.

A couple of years ago I saw a picture of a van going down the road with the driver holding an open pail of anhydrous out the window. I've sometimes wondered how these guys get the stuff into the pail in the first place without getting their lungs and eyes burned out. Jim

Yeah, not too bright alright! I'm not sure where I heard it, or even if it's true, but the cops supposedly caught a guy underneath the main storage tank at the coop w/ a drill, said he was about 1/2 way through. Maybe they should have just let him keep going!
