Hey you Chevy 5 speed manual experts, need some help. Hauled the boy's tractor home, shifter started getting sloppy, moving too far to either side. Made it home unloaded tractor went to pull truck and trailer out of the way, when I shifted into low and let out on clutch was in wrong gear, attempted to put it into low again ,still wrong gear (higher). After which shifter just moves all around and I can't find ANY GEARS..WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND SOLUTION...Thanks
PS.. trans only has approximately 35000 miles on it.

One of my old Vo-Tech Teachers had the same problem with his..... .....He wasn't really a teacher but was hired as a teachers Aid, but was actually better versed in the auto field than the college trained teacher was, anyhow, after hereing what the trained guy had to say and concluded it wasn't the problem, he took the stick and housing out and found a roll pin was broke, it wasn't an actual roll pin, but a Spiral Pin I believe they are call..... ...Replaced it and it worked fine. I can't remember if it was an NV4500 5 spd or the getrag 5spd. I'd say you have the same problem by the sounds of it.

Hey Keith,

Older than a '99?

The big aluminum tranny or the Cast Iron New Process? I know you weren't using an S-10?????

At any rate, sounds like it peeled the retainers up in the shift tower; the ring probably just fell off and they dropped out to either side and turned loose of your shifter.

Not to worry, a two minute fix after you get the shift cover/boot off.

However, if it was a little S-10, that tranny has to about come outta there because it shifts from the rear forward via a shaft.

Aw,

Really hate to admit it in public, but I work the little feller every day. He's startin' to muscle up pretty darned nice too. :>)

On your tranny, pull the shifter plate and boot. Your problem is right up there on top. You'll see it. Betcha the two little "ears" have fallen out. Kinda common with those rascals.

Smarter...I just get the neighbor girl to keep mine legged up. that way I don't get saddle sores in all the wrong places. And they feed it too.
:-)
Thanks for the heads up on fixing darn transmission...Getting to old for all the stuff.

It probably would help to know what year and which 5 speed it is.
