freeze plug problem

Recently had to put in a freeze plug (35 dodge p/u) real PITA as its behind the bellhousing. Anyway it stayed in for 3 mos and now literally fell out! Now I have never been properly trained on freeze plug installation, but I thought the correct procedure was: clean the seat area, hit plug HARD w/hammer attempting to "pop" it preferably with one strike. The plug seems to be the right size but I didn't feel the "pop" I normally would. I fact I had to beat the crap out of it to get it in. (prob why it fell out) So who can tell me the correct way to do this?

Reminds me of the fork lift engine I overhauled and put 4 new ones down the side. I put hardening sealer on them and beat them some but didn't get too carried away as the block seemed thin and was makeing some noise as I banged on the plugs. I sure didn't want to crack the block ! After I got it running and warmed up they started leaking so I guessed they weren't tight enough. I was luck to be able to get to them with a long large punch and a bigger hammer this time without needing to tear anything apart. I gave them some more hard wacks as I wasn't as worried about breaking the block as I was upset they leaked. I also think having coolant in it helped absorb the shock. It does take alot more pounding on them than I thought one would need.These were steel ones.

Aloha, If it is an expansion plug, looks like a short cup, then I would get one that is a snug fit before it is inserted. The outer edge of the cup should be even with the block surface after installation. If it is the other type of plug, welsh plug??, then you should also get one that would be a snug fit (just barely fits). The convex side should be facing out when installing. Usually this type of cup, stops when it hits the shoulder in the hole so it won't fall in. After it goes in, it should expand at the shoulder after a couple of wacks. If it does not have a shoulder in the hole, then it should use an expansion plug.

David Some people put the plugs in the freezer and hurriedly before they thaw use a socket to drive them in,what I like to use you can get at most auto parts stores a plug made out of copper with a bolt in the center ,it slips in easily and you tighten bolt and it expands it you can install and walk away in 2 minutes,check with your auto parts man , good luck !

Well if ya don't have one of them thar fancy tools to do it i have used a scoket that fits the plug and a extenshion and a lite coat of 3H permatex . the only freeze plug that ever came on on me was a quicky repair at the drag strip with one of them rubber ones it lasted till the last run and poped out on the return road .. Make sure that you have the correct one close is not good enough.

I think he's talking 'bout a welsh plug rather than the cupped "frost plug", isn't he? The kind you dimple the center to 'expand' it?

OK thanks, I put in another last night and so far its holding. I think I will try to pressure test the system before installing the tranny and see if she'll hold. It appears to be a steel plug and doesn't "pop" with one hit like the ones in my 46 Ford tractor. THis one takes 4-5 with a 2 lb hammer to even get it close. Anyway if this fails I'll try the permatex and see if that'll work
