I know this is not related to tractors, but I need help on my GMC sufari van (same as Chevy Astro Van)It's my wife's van. It is a 99 model. Yesterday she was driving up a hill and it started cutting out. The van came home without any more problems. I am thinking fuel pump, but with around 50,000 is too soon for the pump to go out. Pump's in the tank. O for the good old days when you pulled a line off the mechicanel pump if it shot gas across your fender it was good. Thanks for any help Stan in calif

Even if you find something other than fuel pump is the problem change the fuel filter. I had a friend who went thru 3 fuel pumps between 50,000 and 80,000 miles on his chevy pickup. A partially plugged filter causes the pump to run at a higher pressure causing early failure. My machanic friends tell me the first filter change should be at 50,000 miles. Sure cheaper than a $400 fuel pump.

If my take is correct on electric fuel pumps used with fuel injection, they pump at full capacity whenever the engine is running. They pump just as much fuel at idle as at full speed. What is not used is bypassed back to the tank. If this is correct you can expect that it is not just the total miles that wears out the pump but all of the hours it has pumped.

Chief,
It sounds more like a plug wire breaking down under a load. It's a fairly common problem on GM vehicles. You might begin by giving her a good tune-up, if you haven't done so lately. By the way, most plug wire failure come soon after a tune-up when you've had to pull and twist the wires to get them off the plugs. It breaks the conductor inside the wire and it takes a little while for it to show itself. Don't overlook the fuel filter as a maintenance item. It will go a long way toward making your fuel pump last longer. Also, that van doesn't use a MAF sensor, as someone else mentioned, so don't worry about that part (what a relief!). Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

our buick got to doing yhat and it was the fuel pump. would only hold 36 psi instead of 42 psi. as long as you were easy on the pedal it would run alright, but to pass someone and push the pedal down, it would just about die. i put a guage on and taped it to windshield is how we found it.

Hi Stan,

Anything is possible I guess, but I really doubt if it is your fuel pump. Usually, if a fuel pump gives up, you ride home on the end of a hook.

Likewise, a plugged fuel filter produces the effect of a bad transmission with a lot of downshifting and late upshifts; although, this could still be your problem.

But generally, when those things "cut out" like that, it is almost always secondary ignition related. First place I'd look would be the wires, cap and rotor.

Also, another area to take a peek at would be that MAF sensor. They have a way of collecting "crap", but will usually set a code and turn on your check engine light at the same time.

Dunno, hope you get 'er figured out.

Allan

i thought fuel pumps either worked or the didn't until i ran into intermittent fuel pump problems on my old 92 gmc sierra..i even replaced it with a brand new napa brand fuel pump..Turned out the napa brand would work but didn't put out the volume..my buddy at gm could tell by listening...i bit the bullet $$$$$ and bought a gm fuel pump...problem solved...

Check to make sure none of the plug wires have gotten against the manifold and burnt thru..had one give me fits a year ago, sometimes miss and run terrible, other times run great..had a burnt spot, would sometimes blow up against the manifold..also try a fuel filter

HTH,
Tim

Either water in fuel or partially clogged fuel filter. That van has 100,000 mile plugs in it.It also has a mass air-flow sensor pn#25180303.It doesn't sound like a MAF problem, though. If it only happened going up hill when fuel consumption was high,a fuel filter sounds like the culprit.

One way or the other ,it was suggested to me by an really sharp garage operator to not run with less than 1/4 tank of fuel.Liquid level helps to keep that little electric pump cool and extends it's life.May save your pump and some $$.
