Does anybody have one? I have a man trying to sell me on the merits of one. He says they are made in Turkey and come in 5'6" and 6'3" sizes. Supposedly the greatest thing since strawberry shortcake. Cost $3K to $3.5K.
Don't even know the brand name. Maybe CCM/Turkay?

My dad and I sell Reese Hay mowers. They have several different models, but we like the plain and simple ones. I think the 8' model has like 8 moving parts. Basically, if you aren't an idiot and don't try to cut down a fence post you won't mess it up. Wait, I take that back, we did have a guy try to do that and it just broke the shear bold on the lower link of the mower. Put in a new one and kept going. That is a true story. Also, the Reese mower has a gauge wheel on one end and a small skid next to the tractor. You can set it to have clearance over the ground you are mowing so you don't break the stems over. With this, you will have faster regrowth. Forgot to mention, no gearboxes. So all in all, no oil, fewer moving parts and runs quieter.

Geez, I opened up a whole new unknown world. Anybody got a link to these items? This guy claims to be the only dealer in NH and I see a dealer in Tennessee on the internet that sells them for considerably less money.

I have a PZ drum mower that I have had for about 8 or 9 years and love it. I cut Coastal Bermuda hay with it and have not spent a cent on it except for blades. Previously I had a Kuhn disc mower that gave good service too. When I had about wore out the Kuhn and was looking for a replacement I talked with some factory reps at the Sunbelt Expo that year and they sold both drum and disc mowers and they said that the drums would outlast the disc mowers and require less maintenance and upkeep. The other big thing is that the drum mowers are about 40 to 50 percent cheaper too. The only thing is that if you need a wide mower, 7 or 8 ft the disc is about the best way to go because if you get a drum that big it is very heavy to transport and requires a big heavy tractor, and the big drums are about as expensive as a disc mower. PZ was bought out by Vicon I think a few years ago. A neighbor has a Fella mower that I like better than the PZ I have. It is German and is very well made. Many people don't like the drum mowers because they don't spread the hay flat like the disc mowers do but that doesn't bother me since I fluff the hay anyway.

I got to run PZ Drum mowers when I was working my way through school. Mechanic that worked for the same operation said they were full of ball bearings that wouldn"t hold up as long in our rough-arsed hay fields as they would in the manicured fields over in Europe. Makes since. They are some hay cutting Dudes though! I liked running them. Blades were easy to change. One machine was bad about shearing the plastic coulper, in the top shaft - between the two pairs of drums.

Once you get hold of one you will never go back to a sickle mower. They have been around in Europe since about 1968! They will cut through short "woolly" grass that tends to clog sickle mowers. they will go through laid wet or tangled grass like a hot knife through butter.

I have a 10ft Reese drum mower. I love it. Very little HP required. My wife uses it with our JD 3020. Paid $8k for it new. Only real limitation is it dosn't condition well, especially for northeast weather, but I do no dry hay anyway.

I'm flattered. It's what my father in law calls my jersey cows "barnrats."
