I need a little help with the lights on my 1995 F350 Dually. I hooked up a "new" trailer to my 7-blade RV-style hookup and at first it appeared that the lights were all working fine. I took off down the road, and happened to look back when I put the brakes on at the first intersection and the running lights on my fenders came on dimly when I pushed the brake pedal (I thought...hmmm that's messed up).

I went home and pulled the plug and deduced that the ground wire was in the wrong space on the trailer plug (wrong to my truck anyway) but it was too late as none of my rear fender running lights or the set of lights under the tailgate work anymore. I couldn't find a blown fuse that controlled those lights (tail lights still work on the truck too) so I may have fried a wire somewhere? Anyone ever have a similiar problem, and how do I find the cause so I can fix it?

Thanks everyone. There was a 25 amp fuse under the hood for those lights. Weird...because the running lights on top of the cab and the tailights both were fused in the cab. I suppose that fusebox was full and when they stuck on the dually fenders and lights they powered them from the engine compartment fusebox for ease of wiring, etc..

If your truck came with a factory tow package then there are seperate fuses under the hood for your trailer lights and turn signals. The owners manual should show you which ones they are. Otherwise, turn your lights on and use a test light to probe the fuses. HTH JF

Some trailers are wired with a horse trailer setup vs a RV wiring setup. There are adapters that can convert one setup to the other. Or you can change the wiring setup on the trailer plug. Several sites on the internet show the different wiring setups, adapters and conversions. As for the lost power to the plug, trucks normally use a seperate wiring circuit to power the trailer through relays. Under the hood, there should be a box holding the relays and fuses for that circuit.

Brent, here is the industry standard for trailer wiring. I have wired all the trailer that I manufactured to this standard for 25 years. All RV's, and most every trailer manufacture uses this wiring diagram...HTH..Keith

Had the same thing happen on my F350. Was it the first time you hooked to that trailer? The trailer I have has the small round 6 pin, I bought an adapter to adapt it to the big 7 pin, got the wrong adapter, seems two wires are different from Ford to Chev. If the trailer was wired for other than a Ford, that`s probably the deal. Just a guess Brokenwrench

Does your truck have fuses under the hood aswell as under the dash? I had a similar problem with my 97' last year and it was the fuse under the hood. I would also check and make sure trailer is wired the same as truck...Jim
