I have a Cockshut/Coop 40. It did not have a battery or cable on it when I got the tractor. I need to know if it is a neg or pos ground before I try to start it.

Ask on the Oliver Cockshutt board below,
Phil Heisey would know and also, let them know if it is gas or deisel. I think that makes a difference
I've got one in the shop in pieces its a diesel
and I think it takes two batteries. I got it in pieces kinda like a kit.

Check for if 6 or 12 volt first, alternator 12 volt negative, Generator either 6 or 12 volts, probably pos ground, but not sure

If it has a battery ignition, whichever post on the coil, pos or neg, goes to the distributer is the polarity.
