Being in the market for a compact tractor, I've scanned this forum for advice on which may be the better used tractor to purchase. My current choices are a MF 1010 with 1000 hrs and a 60"
belly mower for $3200. A Ford 1210 with a front end loader for $7000. And a couple Case 446 with assortment of impliments from $1000 to $2500. The tractor will be performing light duties, Mowing, tilling, blading, snowblowing, etc. and maybe post holing. Do any of the tractors I've mentioned sound good or is there anouther brand I should keep my eyes open for??

Case 446 as in the garden tractor? Although a very tough garden tractor, I out-grew my 446. My environment in MI is different than yours in the winter though. I could not keep up with some snow storms removing snow up here with the Case 446. Those 4-5 foot snow drifts were not manageable. I would call the neighbor at $35 a pop every 2-3 weeks to plow the drive and access to the barn.

The 446 3-point roto-tiller really did not go deep enough, chop up weeds well and 42" was too wide for weed maintence in-between rows. So, back to the walk-behind 24" wide tiller for that job.

The mower cuts grass ok, but the 100-lb deck got to be a pain to handle when removing for tilling in the garden, then back to installing the deck for mowing again. I got lazy & simply bought a light duty JD L-100 for cutting the grass. It handles better in tight areas as well, but does have a real 'Murray type low dollar' sheet metal frame that would bend under some Case 446 heavy activities.

I replaced the Case 446 with a small JD 420U farm tractor with a front loader, snow blade & rear tiller.

My 2 cents.

Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody's got one! My first place on acreage was a 3 acre place.I bought a used JD435D (had a Gimmy 2-51 engine in it)rated at 29 hp as I recall. I thought it was too big when I bought it but I found out better. My point is you'll end up needing more horsepower and more weight to do some of the things you are talking about doing and find yourself underpowered with the under 20 hp compact tractors. The old Ford's and Ferguson's at about 25-30 Hp are just about right but you really want something with live hydraulics. The MF 35 or 135 fit in that category. A Ford 3600 or a 3910 (little bigger)might do as well as some others in the 30 to 35 Hp range. hope this helps. Good Luck

It would all boil down to personal preference. In my crumbled opinion, I would want a little bit more HP than 16 or so, a front end loader is a MUST, belly mowers are nice, but a pain to remove if you need to, might need a little more weight (and heigth) to use a post hole digger. How many acres dow you have? Will you be wanting to run a small plow or other implements in the future?

I only have a 3 acres. The tractor will obviously be uesd to cut the garss. Reason for belly mower is you can get into tighter spots than a 3 pt. Finish mower. I've just built a new house and have alot of landscaping. So a tiller will be used to work up the dirt and front end laoder or blade will then move the dirt. I don't see a plow in my future. Once land in landscaped, tractor will only be used to cut grass and move snow and probably ad some forks to move light pallets at my business . That small 1210 Ford with the loader that I mentioned also has a blade with it, no mower, and priced at $5500, NOT $7000.

I hope you all don"t laugh me right out of here but here goes...I have just purchased a 60 acre farm and will raise livestock. I need a tractor and my budget is $10,000. Here"s the trick, I am a single female and while I have driven a tractor or two I know nothing about them. It seems that every male I know wants to tell me how to buy this tractor and I don"t thing they know much either. My decison will definetly include a bush hog, I"d hope it could also cut lawn. Other then fields, I can"t forsee the future. It would be fabulous if I could use a front end loader too. I hear alot of good about Massey Ferguson. I hear JD is terrific but pricey. I can"t inherite someone else"s problems. I don"t know enough.
Any advise?

Don't forget about the Kubota's. Very reliable tractor. Other than basic maintenance they are trouble free and cheap on fuel.
