Looked at a IH 574 diesel today it has 5300 hours on it , never been rebuilt. From what I've heard 4500-6000 hours are usually when they need to be rebuilt. After running for 5-10 min. it had light blue smoke still coming out the exhaust. It also had no muffler on it, he said it's only been off for about 10hrs. Over all the tractor looked good. Any opinions?
Thanks

I had two 574 and 5000 hrs is nothing for that engine. 239 CID engine is the best part of the tractor. Do you need also the weak parts ?

1 - Power steering and front end if equipped with a front loader
2 - Shifting mechanism
3 - Could be hard starting in very cold climate but it depends of the engine, very easy starting (574-1971, fuel pump need to be primed), very difficult (574-1976, auto-priming fuel pump), not the same starter;

Forgot two points, good & bad :
1 - Very fast tractor, over 25 MPH @2500 rpm, if equipped with "Y" differential;
2 - Too much weight over front wheels because of short wheelbase; wet sleeve engines are heavy, 239 CID engine weighs 905 pounds; a 248 Perkins weighs around 550 and a Ford 700-750 pounds.

I just sold one we bought new in 1973. My biggest concern for one with that many hours would not be a little blue smoke. We had to overhaul ours at 5400 hours because the seals between the cylnder sleeves and the block started to let coolant into the combustion chamber. The tractor was not using any significant amount of oil. The other concern would be the brakes. On these tractors they will continue to work past the point when the disks start breaking down. Once this happens it is an endless process to get the hydraulic system purged. The parts for a brake job on these tractors can easily be $700 to $1000 and that does not count the labor (brakes are internal in the transmission). They are great tractors, but if you get one with that many hours that has had no mechanical refurbishing over the years they become a money pit in a hurry, Once the spending is through you are good to go for another 20 years.

Thanks for your opinions. Still thinking about it. One of the draw backs is it has a 7ft. loader on it, a 5ft. would be more the size I could use. Thanks again.

I've got a late 574D with an honest 1120 hrs. Until it gets warmed up it smokes a gray smoke. After reaching operating temp, the exhaust is as clear as a gasser.

If it was not warmed up to operating temperature it will smoke that way also. Take an oil sample and a cooland sample. We have a 674 and I think the German International is a very good engine.

Probably due for an overhaul of the engine and
injection pump.

Hey Larry,

I can't speak to that tractor in particular, but usually the diesels run until all of us here are completely haired over.

It's the gassers that need the cleanin' up at around 5,000 hours.

I sure wouldn't worry 'bout a little smoke comin' out of a diesel chimney.

Dunno,

Allan
