Tractor Mishaps in Parades

I've been working on on older-restoration Case CC. A few weeks ago, I drove it out of the garage and parked it. A few hours later, there was a loud BOOM that shook the house. It turned out that the bead on one of the old rear tires split. The tube must have protruded through, and the rim dropped and popped it. Even though it forced me to finally replace the tire, I was thankful that the tire didn't wait to blow during a parade. I've heard of tires blowing and even rotted rims collapsing during parades.

In May, I went to a parade and a man had a nice old Allis Chalmers that ran like a top. As soon as he got onto the parade route, his tractor stalled, and there he was unable to move. The other entries had to weave around him. The man didn't know why he stalled. Someone figured out that the problem was a small cotter pin on the throttle/carb linkage that had fallen off and disappeared. Someone had to run off to get another pin or piece of wire, and eventually he got running again, but not until the parade was over.

I haven't seen many parade breakdowns in front of crowds at the worst time, but I'm sure some people have some stories to tell.

A couple of years ago I got to help push a stalled firetruck off of a parade route.

Know where I can get a belt pully for my 37 CC?

I've seen a couple tractors quit in the middle of a parade from running out of gas(!). Also a several conk out due to fouled plugs, after sudden cloud bursts resulted in their magnetos going away, etc. It's somewhat embarassing for the the owners. Also entertaining for the crowd - especially if they know the operator!

I witnessed a scarey one however involving a nicely done Ford 8N V8 conversion that caught fire during a parade. The tractor became fully involved in a matter of seconds and was destroyed. Fortunately no one was injured.

As a result of the above experiences I now carry a tow strap and a 10# BC-rated extinguishers aboard each of my tractors at parades, etc. Have used the tow strap a couple times to "rescue" embarrassed friends. But I hope I will never need to use the extinguishers.

Well, I can honestly say I have never had a tractor break down in a parade before.Have had trouble at shows with one. But my most humiliating moment with tractors was I was in a local parade for a club I use to belong to.It was at night time and we had to trailer our tractors. About half way through, my fuel pump decided to take a dump!

I had a magneto fail in the Red Power parade at Madison in 97.(1927 McCormick 10-20) walked up the the vender area, bought a new rotor and some jb weld from a guy. took my busted bakelite pieces out to my pickup and drilled pinned and glued it back together and had it running for the afternoon parade. A little embarasing to have a tractor puke right in sight of the whole world but it gives you a good feeling to be able to revive it.

I saw a big steamer fail at a show this past year. Finally had a Farmall M come out and pull the monster out of the way so others could pass.
Don't know why it should be embarrassing. Just a day in the life of a 50-100 year old tractor.
