I have an Allis-Chalmers 5030, 26 PTO HP. What would be the best size for a Brush Hog (or Bush Hog) rotary mower for this tractor? I am deciding between a 4' or a 5'. Want to do more than just cut grass. This tractor does have a very slow low gear.

We pull a 5 foot BushHog brand rotary cutter behind our 8N (which has less power) no problem.

Tramway, I have a '82 model AC 5020 that I bought brand new. It can only handle a 4' rotary cutter and a 5' groom mower. I would not go larger than a 5' rotary cutter and you may have trouble in high grass with that. As for groom mowers, you could probably get a 6' as long as you have decent grass to cut, a 5' would be ideal though...

don't know what kind of grass you are choping, but in northern IN, I mow with a 5 foot chopper,
case 611B(64 hoss). I have to run in second gear to mow the heavy stuff, 'bout wide open. weeds no problem but the grass is a bit harder on 'em.

I have had a 5 foot finish mower and a 5 foot brush hog that I have used with my Symplicity 9523 which is the same as the Allis 5020. Both work just fine with it. They cover the width of the tractor plus. I have a loader with a 4 foot bucket. It is just slightly wider than the front tires but the rear turf tires are a bit wider. I chopped four acres with the brush hog two feet higher than the tractor in second gear this summer. Only problem was the screen in front of the radiator plugged and caused it to over heat about three times. I bought it new in 1980 and have used it rough all these years. For over ten years I mowed over ten acres of grass. Still starts and runs like a champ.

Better stick with 4'. You don't have a lot of tractor there so if your into something other than grass & weeds your going to have trouble....

I don't mean to be picking on anyone, but "BUSH HOG" is a registered brand name. BRUSH HOG really isn't correct either, even though that's what everyone calls them. The correct term is rotary mower, or rotary brush cutter.

You are correct. But I wanted to make it clear that I wasn't talking about a belly mower or something else.

I understand, if you called it by the proper name most folks wouldn't know what you were talking about. That's the way it is, and probably always will be. Sometimes I just need to spout off, it wasn't directed at you or anyone else in particular.

Tramway guy;

You could go with a 5ft. rotary cutter and not take a full swath if you are into heavy stuff. Also have a better chance of covering your tire tracks.
