NO CHARGE!

I bought an old 1950’s Towmotor forklift this summer to move stuff around in the barn. I got it running fairly well except I’m getting tired of having to hook the battery charger to it every few days. The charging system is shot in my opinion, as is a lot of the old wiring. It’s currently set up as a 12-volt negative ground but I have no idea if this was original. It has a generator and voltage regulator but I’ve removed both and can’t find a single marking of any sort on either one. Not even any letters on the terminals. I really looked hard too; I can see where the generator tag is missing. It was still all connected so I’m assuming it was a 12-volt generator. The voltage regulator is rusted beyond any hope of working and all the terminals on the generator seem to be shorted out to ground with the wires removed.
Given all these problems, I figured I would just put an alternator on it as it looks like the brackets will be easy to adapt and rewire the whole thing in the process. Does this sound like a good idea? If so what should I look for in an alternator and where could I find a wiring diagram. It seems the Delco 10SI are pretty popular. Would one such as the one below on Ebay be what I’m looking for?

The wiring should be pretty basic. It does have an ammeter. Do I need to add a resistor to the ignition coil?
Sorry for so many questions!

Thanks!
Tim

Tim, In my opinion, the simplest thing to do would be to get a Delco "single wire alternator". As the name implies, there is one wire from the stud on the rear to the battery. If you want to see the charge on the ammeter, run the wire to the ammeter, then to the battery. Good Luck.

I have the same thing a Towmotor unknown age with no charge. The alternator looks to be mounted from the bottom & is small... My first impression is non standard size. Motor is a Continental 4 mounted in front of the operator station. 2.7K lift. Let us know how your update turns out.

Yes, 12-8 resistor needed before Dist.

Not necessarily - if it is already set up for 12 volts - but who can tell if it is done properly. You might check coil current with an ammeter.

I've done the resistors for fear of burning out points-spent maybe 50$ over the years-being safe I guess just seemed right1 Wayne

Probably can get a rebuilt from your local parts emporium for that price, when you figure in the postage. There are several digrams available on this website for installing alternators on Farmalls - probably the same installation would work for your equipment.
