Bent Push Rod Question

I've started working on an old Massey Harris Challenger and removed the valve cover and found the valve train to be in good shape and all the valves loose and lubricated, but one of the push rods is bent. My question is, can bent push rods be straightened and reused, or do I need to search for a replacement?

I have several replacement bent pushrods available. Which particular shape do you need?

Aloha, Just out of curiosity, what caused them to bend?

I kinda like the one in the middle. Do you have any bent valves to go with it?

Compare the pushrod to the others and make sure they are the SAME LENGTH!!! Ran into this issue with a 1955 Cadillac. Guy paid for a complete overhaul and got it back with some terrible valve noise. Replace the bent push rod TWICE and finally decided to pull the head and dig deeper. With all the push rods laying on the bench I found that two of them were longer then the rest, I kept replaceing the bent push rod with the exact same part. Couldn't believe the "mechanic" mixed and matched parts during an overhaul.

I think I"d be checking the valve lash all the way along. Something caused the rod to bend: stuck valve, stuck rocker arm, loose adjustments the rod jumping out getting caught. Our tractors all working we"d replace the pushrod. once bent strength has been compinised and will likely bend again. Only my 1 3/4 cents worth.

I'm with Sloroll on this one. If not too bad straighten it for now best you can so you can get it running and check for more problems. Then as time permits get another one.

I have straightened many pushrods and reused them. More than likely you aren't going to be really working this tracor again. There should be no noticeable loss of power for parading or display. Even the limited plowing you may do should be fine. If it were a high RPM engine or a heavily used work tractor it should be replaced. Make sure the valve is not sticking anymore, straighten the rod and replace it. If you stumble over another push rod put it on the shelf somewhere as a just in case.

Believe it or not, my auto machanics instructor taught me how to straighten a push rod, and how to roll it across a FLAT surface to make sure it is straight. It's amazing how many push rods are not straight, even though they do not appear to be bent.
