Yesterday three of us Manitobans took a road trip to North Dakota and purchased some Generic Ivermectin. I bought five, 5 liter jugs. Paid $532 CDN in total. Last fall the local vet clinic sold ONE JUG of Dectomax for $500. Pressure from loss of sales caused them to drop their price to $350 a jug. I figure I saved a lot of money yesterday.

Night before last Pfizer sponsored a supper in our local community for customers of the vet clinc. After a presentaion on their new Bovi-Shield Gold they had a presentaion on these generics. Best they could come up with was nobody really knows how the generics will preform compared to the brand name ones, and that how their jugs were so special to help keep the product from breaking down. Told us if too much sales were lost Ivomec and Dectomax would be pulled off the market. I thought that last statment was a load of BS.

They whinned that the cost of production kept them from lowering their price further, but they had still made enough money from people like me to host a free roast beef supper. These suppers are an annual affair all over our province, not just our area.

The "Top Line" generic works pretty well for us. We usually use pour on in the spring and injectible in the fall. In OK, the generic costs about 1/4 as much as the name brand. Usually you can get product with a pretty good shelf life to cut down on the number of trips you have to make. Also, try www.Valleyvet.com - I have had good luck ordering product from them. Also, the BovishieldGold is a good preventitive to give your calves. We usually give the first shot in the spring as small calves and give them another shot at weaning time. And any heifers we retain for replacement heifers, we give them a third booster of it 30 days prior to breeding and we give our momma cows a booster of it once a year prior to turning the bulls in. Our breeding rate since starting this process has been over 95%. Just my .02 worth.

Our calves are on the Pfizer Gold program. Shots at turnout and 2 weeks prior to selling/weaning in the fall. We sell calves at an invitational sale held by the purebred breeder who we buy bulls from. All calves on the sale are on The Gold program and come from some of the best farms in the area. Large lots of quality Charolais calves, and the buyers love it. We see a 5 to 10 cent premium for our calves.

Every animal on the place gets (or rather got) Dectomax in early December. Cows get Bovi-shield prior to breeding season. Scour guard prior to calving. Good herd health pays.

Don't Know what RIFE is, but governments are sure food at legislating to protect big company's profits. The patents have expired on these products, yet Canada's laws for lisencing generic veterinary products is so restrictive few have even tried. I have no problem with a company holding a patent and charging to recover R&D costs, but after your patent us up, give the customers a break. I figure by this time next year the loophole in the law that allows us to bring these generics in will be closed.

Yeh, right and Capone didn't deserve what he got either. Must be another government conspiracy to keep people unhealthy.
