She's not interested in whether or not you starch your clothes--she's interested in YOU (we hope). So wear whatever is appropriate for the place you are going, maybe just a little better than what everyone else wears.

As others have said, be yourself. If things get serious, she should know who you are, not a phoney who was always trying to impress her. Make sure you both have fun.

My bride & I knew each other for about 8 months before our first date because she was engaged to someone else. That gave us a real advantage because we thought we knew all along that nothing more than friendship could happen, so there was no pretension and we got to know each other as friends. It has worked for us alamost 40 years now.

OK it depends on where you're living. Here in Alaska, if you're prosperous you wear clean Carharrt work clothes, like bibs. Regardless of what you do for a living. Wash your pickup before you pick her up. And act like everything she says is the most fascinating thing you ever heard. Don't talk about yourself. Most females live to be 70 or so before they realize that maybe the world don't revolve around just them.

Not one person in twenty knows how to iron a shirt right. Since we cover about every other kind of "how-to", I figure I might as well do a how-to on ironing a shirt. I never could iron a shirt until somebody showed me the right way to do it.

First, turn the ironing board around so the big end is on your right (if you're right handed). The pointed end is no good for ironing shirts.

Get the iron hot enough for the fabric. You'll want to use steam if you aren't using starch.

Start with the collar: Lay the shirt down on ironing board so the outside is up, and turn the collar up so the outside of the collar is facing the board. Hit it with starch or steam and iron it flat. Then fold the collar back down and iron the outside of the collar. Use lots of starch, then dry iron it until it's dry.

Now iron the shoulders: With the collar to your left, put the right shoulder over the far right hand corner of the board and iron it. (The shirt will be hanging off the end of the board, like if you were to put it on a hangar.) Then slide the shirt so the left shoulder is on the near corner of the board and iron that shoulder.

Now do the sleeves: Stretch a sleeve flat and iron one side. Use LOTS of starch: you want that sleeve to be about as stiff as cardboard. Turn the sleeve over and do the other side, too. Then repeat for the other sleeve.

The last thing you iron is the body of the shirt: Lay the shirt on the board so the shirt tail is on your left and the button row is running down the middle of the board. Iron the left front of the shirt, then slide it around and do the back. Repeat until you've ironed the whole shirt, ending up at the right front. Again, use plenty of starch on the front.

It's best to let the shirt cool a little before you put it on. That way it gets stiff before it can wrinkle.

Good luck. Remember, you're not doing this to be comfortable. You're doing it for the Lady.

I think the thing that impresses me the most is a guy with manners - holds the door open for me and is nice. If you can get it done, iron the jeans - Wranglers are the ones of choice - (Wrangler butts, etc.) and a nice shirt. If you are taking her to a dance or something along those lines, starch the jeans - until the stand up by themselves, if not, just a nice iron job will do. Save the flowers for date #2. As for the starch - Wal-Mart has a liquid starch that is blue - you can put that in the washing machine with your jeans and then let them drip dry or you can get the spray can starch that you spray while ironing - don't spray too much or it will make flakes on your jeans. The liquid stuff works better for the really heavy starching - or take them to the cleaners.....

Okay, since nobody wants to answer your question straight up, I will. Starch usually comes in an airesol can from the grocery store. Find a friendly older lady and politely ask her where it is. When you get the starch home, plug in the iron and when it is hot, place your shirt on the ironing board and iron it once over. Let it cool a few, then spray the starch on one sleve and iron it. You should notice a nice flat crease in the sleave. Repeat with the other sleeve and the collar. I recommend you not do the pants unless they are slacks. Leave the starching of the blue jeans for the women folk. As a father of 19 and 16 year old daughters, nothing works better than a firm handshake (just don't crush his hand, try to match his grip to yours) and going to the door to pick her up. You do not want to honk your horn. Good luck. Rick

Make sure you have plenty of gas in your vehicle. If she is living at home, her dad will never believe you actually ran out of gas. Don't honk your horn for her to come out. Be on time, but not too early. You can use the horn after you get married. Stan

-leave something on the truck seat ie; a magazine that involves your interests (tractors etc)
-wash & sweep out the truck
-don't smoke in the truck (unless she doe's)
-Leave the chew at home
-Don't cuss (unless she doe's)
-Don't stare at below the neck line
-be polite
Worked for me (or maybe it didn't) 25 years ago.

no flowers on first date. also have a clean hat in the truck ,but do not wear it when you pick her up, keep it in the truck,if she's wearing her hat then you can put your hat on. talk about frogs and stuff like that. try to say something funny every once in a while,(this might come naturally)but don't over do it. just be polite and don't use cuss words.

The ones I didnt like were the ones who couldnt/wouldnt look me in the eye, I didnt trust them lol. HOWEVER one of my buddies said LOOK OUT FOR THEM they are a wolf in sheeps clothing trying to impress old dad ???

Anywho, do other dudes in ur area starch their shirts???? If not, the girl may think youre wierd or NOT COOL and thats the worse thing I hear can happen to a teen these days lol

Let us know how things turn out, good luck

Starch is O.K. as long as you don't use too much. The one thing to know about good women is that they attach more significance to the little things you do for them. What won me my wife's heart (and the rest of her) was that I paid attention to what she was saying and doing. A few weeks into dating, she came down with a cold. I made some chicken soup and toasted cheese sandwiches at home and took it to her. She later told me that's when she fell in love with me. If you and her were meant to be together, things like that go a lot further than jewelry or other expensive gifts.

Good luck annd just be yourself

Another suggestion would be,if you let us know a time, we`ll make sure and be online. Then, if you got one of them cell phones that gets the internet, you can just take a bathroom break and update us. We`ll just keep walkin you thru it.
If things get intimate, it would be to your advantage to have a picture phone. That way you could send us pictures so we`d be better able to assess your situation.
No really, be loose, be yourself, and have fun.

I don't know if I'd go for starching jeans, I would think that it might be a bit like wearing 2x4's, Starched shirts can also be a bit unconfortable to wear as well, a good steam ironing has always worked well for me in the past and still does. Unfortuanlty I've got a day job as well as a farm...:(

have fun!

You seem to be serious about this starch thing - so here it goes. Starch is plywood in an aresol can. You don't want to do it to the whole shirt, but it will make your creases really sharp. Around the collar to keep it straight is ok too. I've only used it on my military uniforms, but have seen a few cowboys at the local fairs that are using it obviously. They are always with their girl. It's availble in the laundry section at the grocery store.

Well then, just iron it. You don't want her to think that you got some other woman doing it for you, or using a dry cleaner. Leave it a little sloppy so she knows you need a woman's touch. At least you make an effort and that goes farther in a woman's eyes. Just be real clean and put on some smellin dip, they like that.
