Alternator Wiring

I need some help hooking up an alternator. Its an old Motorola 84 amp with the regulator attached to the back. There are two terminals, one marked OUTPUT (that one's a no brainer) and the other is marked STA. The remains of a crimp connector are attached to that stud so it was hooked up to something at one time, but what?

Thanks,

Jack

Likely, 2 wires come out of the attached regulator, and connect to the alternator, black to ground, red to output of (+) rectifier.

How many OTHER wires come out of the regulator, and what COLOR are they?

STA = Stator... the raw AC output before the rectifiers. This can be used for various things... to operate an electric choke, or to operate a tachometer that uses the alternator's frequency to calculate the engine speed.

What was the original application of the alternator?

Bob, I got the alternator off a street sweeper that was being junked. There are a total of four terminals--OUTPUT, STA, GND, REG. There are two pigtails coming out of the regulator--one connected to REG, the other to GND.

If STA is the unrectified output I don't see why I couldn't just ignore it and hook it up like a single wire alternator. Correct?

Thanks
