Hi Guys,

Just put my wife in the hospital with 5 broken ribs, broken collarbone and a dislocated shoulder. They are concerned about a collapsed lung and pneumonia.

You guessed it; that darned horse! And to top it off, I was the feller that shook him out before I let her on him.

I dunno, you just assume that everyone knows this country stuff; it just ain't so. My fault, I never should have let her up on him 'til he was good and muscle tired, I guess. :>(

I'm late reading this. I've been really busy and away from the board lately.

First: 5 broken ribs! OUCH! That's gonna hurt for a while. Try not to be too funny until the ribs heal up some. Laughing can be very painful.

Second: I hope you'll be OK, too, while the cook is laid up. My wife has had some sort of croup/pneumonia for the last 2 weeks and meals at our house are hard to come by.

Third: I'll be praying for you both.

Hi Allan,

Hope your wife gets to feeling better soon.

I too got on to a kick a couple years ago and wanted to buy a couple horses, yearlings, and teach them to pull carts, but my wife has been fightening me tooth and toe nail as horses scare her to ride, she's afraid of heights hence the cart idea.

After reading thru the responses you have received, I see that my wife had more insight than I may have on the subject.

Wishing your wife a speedy recovery. I haven't read all the posts, but may I suggest "round penning", ala Dennis Reis and the others who are perennielly on the RFD channel. Its the "horse whisperer" thing- you basically get the horse to submit, then they just want to please you rather than fight. Sounded goofy to me at first, but it works. My wife continues to break a couple every year (we're 57 now, and she has been at this for 30 years), and to my knowledge, she has never been thrown. It not only works for initially training, but for periodic "tune-ups" when they get a little owly.

I certainly wish her well and hope she can recover very quickly. I think we sometimes forget that anything we do in life has some element of danger and we need to have a healthy respect for equipment and animals.

My prayers and thoughts are with you both.

Allen, Sorry, missed the explanation of how it happend with the sliding stop. If she had thrown her feet forward and had her stirrups positoned right she would have sat deeper in the saddle and kept her balance. The sliding stop is a lot of fun to do if done right and to do a rollback with a couple of 360`s at the end of it makes it even more fun. Get her some lessons and pray hard like the rest of us that she never gets busted up again.

Been around horses and trail riding for over 40 yrs. I have had quite a few friends hurt. The horse threw your wife for a reason. May be it just didnt want to go the route she wanted or didnt want to leave it`s comfortable surroundings, bee stings or just danged mean. If the horse needs to be bucked out to ride I would sell it to a trainer and take the loss. Two friends were severely injured earlier in July when Breeze threw Susan and broke her leg. Barbara got off her horse to help Susan when Breeze spun and kicked Barbara with both feet one hitting her in the left shoulder and the other hit her in the side of the head. Their husbands had to get Barbara and Susan back on their horses and ride several miles to a landing where a helicopter could get Barbara out of the hills. They almost lost Barb but she is getting better. Susan always rides with a loose rein which allows the horse to get it`s head down and buck. They can not buck if the head is kept up. They can dance around and give the rider heartburn but they can not buck with the head up. Spurs are cheap insurance. If the horse does something you dont like, turn it in tight circles or back it for about twenty feet, two things they dont like. Every time you ride a horse you are training it, and it either learns good things or bad things. They associate uncomfortable with the action you are punishing them for but the punishment has to be immediate to the action. Try to keep them on the good side. Make sure your bride wears a helmet. One saved my wifes life 6 yrs ago. Crushed the helmet and she still had a concussion. Horse got wire around its fetlock and freaked out while the wife had a loose rein.

May she have a speedy recovery. It may be quite a while (a year or more) before she is able to do much riding again. When I was 14, I had similar injuries (one rib went through my lung and exited out my back) from a motorcycle accident. Took me over a year before I could ride for more than 15 minutes without being in a world of pain. It did get me out of mowing lawn though..... ..

i have worked with horses for about 10 years, and all my family knows that at least once a year, i will come in hurt. just make sure that it dosent scare her off, then the horse wins. ShepFL had some good ideas, for after recovery attitude adjustment of said horse.

Allan, I am so sorry Mrs. Allan has gotten hurt by this horse. Will keep Her and You in our prayers. May she have a speedy recovery. Sound like the horse did just like he was suppose too. and the Mrs just didn't have a "deep enough seat". I know that this isnt what you want to hear right now but ....When the Mrs. is well he HAS to get back up this horse. for at least a little while. If not the accident will win and she will or might have a fear that she can't overcome.
Maybe there is some place, or someone local that can give her lessons. There are several places around here that do that. If she was ridding a westen saddle....Lengthen out those strups a hole or 2.
Again accidents happen, sometimes there was no one or thing at fault. A relation with a horse is a special thing. It takes time to develope. I pray your wife gets well very soon. Don't keep beating yourself up. In Christian Love,
Later,
John A.

Allan sorry to hear about your wife. With the doctors and the knowledge they have now days she will be ok real soon. My 33 year old daughter has been aroung horses all her life, and spent over two hours on the operating table today. The doctors were putting her ankle back together. She was out riding, and her horse tripped and fell on her breaking her ankle in three places. You just never know about those horses. Stan in calif.

Hi Stan and all,

No, I can't lay this one on the horse.

Totally my fault as Susan was orphaned when she was 13 years old and has been carrying around this memory of her folks giving her riding lessons when she was a kid. Since that time, she has wanted a horse again.

I knew she wasn't in control of the animal from the first time I saw her up a few weeks ago, but she had her heart set on this registered cutter so I bought it for her. Should have gotten her an old plug, I guess. Also, I should have aired him out a little more before turning him over to her, but I just took it for granted that she knew how to handle him.

Anyway, he got away from her and when she hollered "whoa" at a full bore stride, he set it down and went into his slide just like he had been taught. She went right over the top and came down vertical on that shoulder.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts; she will really appreciate it.

Allan

Allen, Sorry to hear of this misfortune. I"m sure she will get back on her feet soon. I grew up with forty five riding horses. Been bit, reared over on, run away with, kicked more than a few times and a few other things. Sometimes a milder mannered horse is in order. The very best wishes to you and yours an keep us updated. Hang in there. I still ride every chance I get.

At least we should all hope she will. Don't blame yourself or let this incident stop you from enjoying your farm, or stop your wife from enjoying her horse. If you spend your whole life living in fear of what bad might happen then you will not ever enjoy yourself.

A bit later after they took the rods out she was activated (Army Reserve) agains doctors orders I agreed with her to not fight the deployment, where as she broke her back again in Kuwait. I could have and should have provented both but we cant put them in bubbles. Wives seem to have a mind of their own.

Got a couple LDAs (aka: Large Dangerous Animals, aka: HORSES) myself and so far my wife still rides them after 3 or 4 trips to the hospital, one session of surgery, much rehab and numerous bruises and strains. I don't know which of us is dumber: her for still riding or me for not getting rid of them. Oh well, she gets her lumps her way and I get mine my way!
Hope your wife mends quickly and well. :-)

Allen -
Sorry to hear of the Mrs. getting pretty banged up. Prayers are with you and her.

Having grown up around horses all my formative yrs. and early adulthood I can assure you horses and broken bones are synonomous. I can also assure you she will most likely come back more determined to ride him.

I for one have broken my RH arm 3x, LH arm 2x, RH leg 2x and LH 2x all from "breakin horses". Got so good at it I decided I would do rodeo as an occupation :) Went to District Championships (bulls) and flopped - so ended my rodeo career.

Sounds like a green horse or high strung. Might want to consider getting a walker for the horse to keep him toned up while wife heals up. Generally once a horse learns it can throw it you, they will try again. Have the Mrs. work him on the walker and a lunge line so he understands who is the BOSS.

Also consider saddling him up and put him on the walker for a "brisk" and "taxing" workout before her next ride - ol hoss should be pretty tired by then and not as flighty.

HTH and wishing for a speedy recovery.

I have been riding since I was able to walk, still cannot predict what those 4 legged critters will do. All one can hope for is everything comes out alright and learns from past experiences. As a kid growing up, we didn't have horses, but the cousins all did. My aunt's "Nugget" threw her about the same, and she got hurt about the same. After he got home from visiting my aunt in the hospital, my uncle took Nugget by the bit, and hauled off like he was coming from Georgia with that punch in the nose, which was a long ways to Indiana. Nugget took a few steps back and a few snorts later, shook it off. My uncle broke his hand and knocked his shoulder out. That was a punch. When my aunt got out of the hospital, she got right back up on Nugget and rode him for years.

My ex-girlfriend's been thrown a number of times too over the years. It'll always be up to them Allan, if you know what I mean. Their horses, their calls, not ours. At times, we need to keep quite and follow their lead.

Good luck buddy. My prayers, and wish her well. And, don't break your hand. Might seem like the thing to do at the time, not afterwards.

Mark

Know the feeling Allen. My wife wont give up on this crazy mare she has, even the trainer that had her for two months told her give it up,said she would make a good rodeo horse. Well after a broken foot and a shattered knee(I wanted to kill it I swear)my wife wont give up on an animal, that crazy mare will be here as long as my wife is. All I can say is try and be more careful and I wish your wife a speedy recovery.

Our thoughts and prayers are with both you and your wife Allan. Don't beat yourself up about this setback ----- you've been in this old farmin' game long enough to know that these things happen to even the most experienced livestock people !! Our neighbour who has been breeding world-wide championship Herefords and Simitel for years was really worked over two years ago by a bull he had worked with for years -- just never saw it coming!! Hang in there!!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and the wife Allan. Maybe when she heals she won't beat you up too badly.

Don't be beating yourself up, I used to ride horsess and there is no way to know what one of them will do at anytime. I had one that wouldn't hurt a flea and you could hang 10 kids on him. He spooked one day and threw me but that just happens no matter how much you try to avoid it.

Got away from them and ride motorcycles now. They can't think for themselves but still dangerous. I know of few people who ride horses that haven't been thrown, kinda goes with the territory.

Hope she gets better soon and we're sending prayers for her.

My thoughts are with you both. I wonder if this'll scare her off? Not likely. I bet it's more like having a bad motorcycle accident, it only scares away people that never should have been on one anyway.

Hey old buddy, that's just what happened around here. The wife remembered how much fun horses were way back when, then a fall, a broken pelvis, cracked vertebrae, and now no more horses. We're praying for the little missus and you. Gonna cover you up with work now, huh. Know she will get better. She has to, to take care of you. Love ya both, Harley
