Scrap manure spreader as utility trailer?

At the scrap yard today I saw a manure spreader someone had turned in. It has good tires and what appears to be strong tin, though the wooden floor is shot and one of the chains underneath has parted. The PTO shaft is intact.

If the beaters were removed and the sides braced, would it self-unload by PTO action to any extent when loaded with firewood or gravel?

Do many of you use spreaders for firewood, or are there better tractor trailers available for bush work nowadays?

What would be a reasonable price for this "beater" if it has been scrapped?

Rod- If your spreader has a good chain and smooth sides and floor and you don"t heap the fire wood above the sides it would probably work. The problem is overloading, like I did, and the wood cathing on a side support or bolt head or other box part.

Dad used an old one without the beaters all the time for hauling dirt, tree limbs, ect. Takes a while to unload because the apron chain is slow. Also, watch that it doesn't hit on a piece of firewood on the the way down around the back sprockets.

On some spreaders the beaters were powered by the PTO while the web was still powered by the ground wheels, if this is the case with this spreader then taking the beaters off you might as well take off the PTO shaft

My neighbor uses his to haul firewood. He cuts 15 cord a year (sells to convienience stores). Most of it goes through the spreader at some point. He has also hauled gravel. His does have a metal floor.

Tried it, broke the chain. New chain was around $300.00. T-bar chain.

A dump trailer has to be quite high in order to have the clearance to dump. This makes it awkward to load with firewood, I would think. A conveyor system would need less effective height in order to function.

What if I replaced the t-bars with some sort of conveyor belt? They market belts for the back of pickup trucks. Probably expensive.

Is there any simple way to put a cylinder onto a spreader and make it dump?

Had a neighbor that did that, it worked very good for firewood. Questionable with gravel, don't think it would haul enough gravel at a time to make it worth your trip to the quarry.

I think it would work with firewood but you'd have to be careful because the apron would tend to catch on big pieces after they're off and tear something up. I think gravel would have it's own problem- especially if you loaded a lot. It would also get into the chain and eat it up.

You could probably use it to unload sawdust, etc. but i'm not sure about something as heavy & hard to move as firewood. The pintle chain isn't that strong, this ones probably had years of acid working on it. The pto shaft is worth 100.00 if it's intact. Be good for moving long stuff - lumber, fence posts, you wouldn't have to reach & lift up over the sides.

Price? Good tires? One to 2x scrap weight value to start, keep on good terms with salvage yard, save them labor to clean and crush. Iron is $70.00 a ton now? Use as tractor trailor, low speed (30-45mph) behind truck utility hauler.

This brings to mind a thought I've had. I've already been at the scrap yard and saw people bring things I've thought a little above "scrap". For instance an old garden tractor with perfectly good wheels and tires. If you ask the yard about the wheels they want a pretty hefty price. Seems like people would advertise things (in some businesses you can post ads for free) like the old spreader before just dumping it at the yard for bottom dollar.
