Hi, I have 6 acres I want to plant to wheat in Indiana. I cant find a good drill for less than $600 - too much. If I disk this ground first, can I broadcast the wheat seed with a spreader and just lightly disk that in? How will this yield? Also, if I would normally do 120 lbs with a drill, how much should I broadcast to account for that seed that wont grow becasue it will be too shallow and too deep? Just looking for your thoughts..

We seeded wheat from a airplane on standing beans one year. Yield was decent.

I've thrown winter wheat out on bare ground to hold dirt on a hillside over the winter and the stuff comes up like gangbusters. Done the same with timothy. I'd disc, broadcast it and then drag it in with chains or an old mattress coil spring. Works great and is finacially sound!!
All you need to do is cover it - did mine with a 3 wheeler. The tractor will compact the ground and leave ruts. I have drug a drill behind my disc on my last cultivating pass and that works well too.

when we raised wheat what we did was broadcast about 120-150# then disc lightly this was in bean pummies mostly but it worked sometimes we even used the fieldcultivator but that tended to plug a bit.

we did this in corn stalks one time I rember.

WE used to disc, broadcast wheat and fertilizer at the same time, then drag it with a harrow(Dad would also add clover seed in the fert cart then when we cut the wheat the ground was ready for the Gov set-a-side program) this was in the late 60s

Agree! Disk first, broadcast wheat and/or fertilizer, and harrow last.
