Just saw a header from CNBC News about that. Happens every time the coast floods.

Best way to tell if your perspective new or used car is flood junk is to check the seat springs for rust. It will show up in just a few days from the brackish/salt water. Most cars can go their whole lives with little or no rust on the seat springs/slides.

Courtesy of our local TV news: Another problem with flood cars - they never can get the bacteria, mold and other pollution nasties out of the upholstry. Want your family in a mold bucket?

Having been in the automotive business for 25 years, and shop owner for 18, I learned that all you have to do is rap real firmly on the underside of the dash. Any silt from a flood will make quite a mess on the carpet. I also pulled a few carpets in my time to check for real rusty floor pans.

Hear you on the floorpan Randy, but nowadays, floorpans get the dip just like the rest of the body.....seats get installed later hence a better place to look....but the dash sounds like a good idea.

Hey I need one of those flooded cars! I've been looking all over for a front clip for a 95 Ford pickup - I've yet to see one for under $1,500. Maybe I can find one of these flooded ones cheaper! No, on second thought I'm sure they'll just try to pawn it off as a "great used vehicle".

See my post in stuck and troubled "Coming soon". I think the price of scrap is going to go down, the market is going to be "flooded".

A guy here bought a flood car, an almost new Mercedes, 10 or so years ago... To my knowledge he never got the bugs out of it, the electric system was trashed... Things would not work when they should, or did when they shouldn't... Our state now has laws dealing with flood cars. All titles to salvaged flood cars are stamped to indicate Water Damage...

Take the title with flood damage out of state, retitle and bring it back with no flood damage on the title. Scammers are slick and do it all the time. Same with wrecked cars.

Had a pretty good flood here in '96- water up to the windows at the local Ford dealer- a caravan of car haulers came one night, rumor has it they all went to Utah, which had no regulations on such things.

Oh yeah, I'm sure of it. I've heard rumblings of Utah tightening up those regs, but I don't know if they have or not.

These cars will be coming from out of state to start with. Going to see a lot of problem vehicles for next several years as they get passed like a hot potato from one buyer to another.

That's the exact reason for my heads up, especially for you folks far removed from the gulf coast which is probably where most of them will be headed.

Even if they"re minimally flooded, water and electronics don"t mix, and you"re very likely to have major electrical problems down the road. RUN, DON"T WALK away from any flooded cars!
