I'm a bit new to all this farming. I have a MF 175 with two pairs of hydraulic quick connect fittings. I have a rock picker that weighs about 5000 pounds and two hoses to raise and lower. When I moved it from it's old home to my place I hooked up the quick connects no problem and drove it 5 miles back to my place. I parked it and used a chisel plow for a while. Now I'm trying to hook it back up again and can't get one of the connect to hook up. I figure it's because I left the load on the tires. I took my cat 951 and picked it up off the ground to remove the pressure from the line, but I still can't get it to engage the coupler. I'm sure this a rookie move, but can some of you more experienced folks give me a clue what I should do? Please!

Thanks,
Keith

Thanks to all. I used a can and pushed the end on the frame of the rock picker. About 3 soup cans full of fluid and the picker was resting on the ground. Then I got the fitting together. Hell of a mess, but it works now. I can't figure why I couldn't get it to connect when I picked it up off the ground with the loader...must still have been pressurized, not just weighted. Thanks again.

Keith

A trick I use is to keep a couple of used connectors around. I pop the pressurized fitting into the used connection and relieve the pressure through the open end of the used connection. This reduces the chance of damaging the end of the fitting and helps keep the spray of hydraulic fluid under control.

As the others say, your hose has pressure in it. Need to relieve that. Do not mess with a jar, no glass around! If you bang the coupler ball with a hammer or onto iron, you likely will damage the ball & it will leak from now on. Be careful with how you beat on this thing.

Usually only one line id pressurized, the other one will connect. So, get one connected. push hard or lightly tap the other one to relaese an oz or 2 of oil. Generally this will pressurize the other line holding the implement up, and now you can hook up this line. Not always tho, some days are just a battle.....

Be real careful, hyd oil can be under 2000 lbs of pressure, and if it hits your skin at that pressure, it will inject itelf under your skin like a hypo. This is very very bad, do not ignore it, you need medical attention _right_ away. Very seriously bad. Rarely happens so we all get lax on it, but be aware.

You should have a "safety" catch on your rock picker. This will be a piece of steel going thru another with a place to put a pin into. Lock the implement up with this BEFORE releasing pressure, if you can. Be careful.

Pushing on the check ball can get you a bath with hydraulic fluid, Loosen the hose fittings slowly at the hydraulic cylinders to release the pressure. But make sure your toes are in the clear.

"I figure it's because I left the load on the tires." I figure that is your problem. Do you have the control lever in float? It should be. You might have to push the end of the hose against something to let fluid out to relieve pressure before you can hook it up.

when you trying to hook up, did you have your tractor running, if so kill it and work your remote lever back and forth to relieve pressure

I did try both the tractor running and not. I did rock the control back and forth to try and take pressure off the line. No luck. If I put the hose end in a jar and push the tip to let pressure out would that relieve pressure on that end of the hose or would I have to wait until enough fluid came out to let the implement hit the ground and take all pressure off?

Thanks guys,
Keith

Those lines have a lot of pressure on them, so ou're not going to be able to just push it on something. I ussually use either the draw bar w/ something over the hose end. Slam the tip against it once or twice to get the intial pressure off. After that you _should_ be able to press it w/ your own strength to get the rest of the pressure off. A good cylinder fully extended or retracted w/ pressure when removed will hold for quite a while. A few of our machines have leaky ends on the hoses, so when the remotes are pulled oil shoots past the ball and onto what ever tey are pointing at. I've got a few new ends, jut gotta put them on.

I don't think a jar is a good idea, I always use a heavy rag and bump it on wood. Be very careful though. Write me at rlp2690@aol.com and I'll call you or you can call me!

You have to bang the ball in the end of the coupler on somthing hard to relieve the pressure in the hose. It will spray out so do it so it won't get you in the face. In the future when you want to unhook, park the machine, shut off the tractor and work the control lever so all the presure in the system is relieved then unhook the couplers. When you hook up again there can still be some pressure from the sun warming the lines and causing the fluid to expand so you may still have to bang the couplers but it won't be as bad.
