My mother owns a Toyota Camry XLE and is need of new tires. She was in Sam’s Club and they told her she needs a V rated tire on this particular model car. I looked it up and a V rated tire is speed rated at 140MPH. My mom seldom competes in NASCAR events any more so is there any sane reason she needs this? I did look at the current tires and sure enough they are V rated. Still it seems like if this is the only reason its just plain foolishness.

My experience with tires is, buy good tires. The truth is I've never found grade A made in USA as those tires are reserved for auto makers to install on new vehicles. Ever notice how they outlast replacements? Always buy the top of the line tire of your favorite brand; it will save you money on steering repairs & bearings. My favorite is Michelin. I know Goodrich makes a few good ones. All tire makers make cheap tires labeled as something else and stay away from them. If a tire only requires no more than a one-fourth oz. weight, it is usually a good tire unless it's truck tire which is hard to balance.

Tim your not the 1st person that has about filled his shorts hearing this ,but it's the law and next time you or your mom buy a new car make sure the tires don't cost as much a piece as the monthly car payment . Having worked in a tire shop before they ram it up your pooper but go to www.tirerack.com and you can find tires pretty cheap and still pay someone like walmart to install them and buy the life time rotate and balance and be money ahead .

Tim, You may not even be able to buy anything rated lower in Her size. For price, check with Tirerack.com and check for their specals on the last page,I have seen tires at 1/2 price. The thing that realy gets me is most (not all)of these odd size tires is the outside diameter is the same as a 195/75/14 that you can buy anywhere for $50.00

The car is designed to use that style tire, due to suspension and steering design for that model. Using an el cheapo tire might work, but you may find steering, handling and abs braking seriously affected especially in an emergency situation. A reputable tire store won't install a downgrade tire,if the car manufacturer specifies a V rated tire due to liability concerns also.

My understanding is that cars must be fit with tires that can stand top speed, as a federal law. Some cars have computer set to limit the top speed, so they can use a lower rated tire.. & some just won't make it to the higher speeds. The mention of reputable tire shops brings up another point, putting "C" load range tires on 3/4 ton trucks.. I see a lot of them with fat "Floating' tires... they do not have the load capacity that the "E" Range 10 plys have...In fact, a "C" tire is close to the limit on front axle of a Diesel Pickup, empty... I wonder why they will sell & install them...

As Stum said. The "V"rating is more that just about the tires top speed. Heat generation, sound characterisitcs and rolling friction are a few more factors. I did enjoy the humour.
