If you can't afford the tools, you can't afford the project.

The liability issue of loaning out vehicles or trailers can get one in a heap of trouble or cost a lot more money than the borrower would like to help you out on. I have loaned these things out but no more. You even have to ask to see their drivers license cause you can not assume they have one. If there is an accident or damage they go after the registered owner. Not the borrower.

I get folks I barely even know, stopping , wanting to borrow the tractor, skid steer and/or truck..... I just tell them no.. If they are nice about it, & it is close, I might do them a favor, at my convenience, & do a bit of work for them... But some folks are nervy, they want it Right Now...

My policy: never loan out your chainsaw, your tractor or your wife--especially the tractor!

I don't mind lending equipment to friends, I would like to think that they would do the same for me if I needed anything. I had one friend haul his new tractor with front end loader about 25 miles for me to use, all the while I'm telling him I didn't need it, he hauled it over anyway. But then, I let another friend use my new post hole digger that I had only dug 8 holes with, when he brought it back the drive shaft was bent, I didn't notice it untill I was ready to finish digging my holes. When I talked to him about it, he said he didn't bend it, and that he knew where I could buy a new shaft. Month or so later he came by wanting to know if I had got a new driveshaft, and that he sure needed to dig a few post holes. I told him that I wasn't going to replace the shaft untill I needed it again. I think he got the drift.

I told ALL family and friends a long time ago (and remind them from time to time) that I do not loan money or tools to friends and family because of the potiential hardship it can create. This way, if the do ask, all I have to do is remind them of the policy I have already stated - this makes that akward moment MUCH easier. If family member really gets in a bind (and they deserve it) I will just give them the money with no strings attached. So far it has worked out very good - much better then doing something you don't really want to do in the first place, then steaming about it for years when something DOES happen.

Good luck,
Dan

Wayne, the way they mostly work is:
You have an item for sell for say $500. They contact you and say they want the item. They say they want to send you $1000 and you are to take out your $500, then send $500 to someone they claim will pick up the item for them. You cash the $1000 check then send the $500 on. The $1000 check later bounces and you or out $500 you sent plus the $1000 bad check. They never planned on picking up your item.

You can't afford the liability of loaning your equipment to him. Consider the likely outcome if he hurts himself or others with your machine, not forgetting the damage to the tractor. Don't do it. Pete

I like the completly honest route in such situations, harder at the start but always better in the end. I tell them I do not loan out equipment because I cannot afford to, it gets returned broken too many times. If I like them well enough I offer to take my equipment to their job and do it myself. If I dont like them well enough to offer my labors they are S.O.L. and no less off than if I didnt own the equipment for them to borrow to start with, now are they? If the guy cant live with that he wasn't a friend to start with.

Tell him you don't loan out equipment but you'll be glad to do it for a fee.

Wayne,I have a really good friend of a life time been friends longer than I want to remember, Learned long time ago about loaning him anything that is powered, burnt up 2 chain saws, 3 skill saws and other tools, so now if he needs anything done that requires the use my tractors "I DO THE WORK." That way I keep a valued friend and my equipment in running condition....Keith

If you never borrow stuff they cant get too mad if you dont lend stuff either. My policy is I dont lend but I wont ask you to borrow anything. With the half gallon of whiskey plan on your equipment being ruined upon return.
